C. Lesson Proper/ Class Discussion
Teacher Activities Student Activities
“What do we call about an equation contains
a radical expression with a variable in the “ Radical Equation Sir/Ma’am”
radicand?”

“Very Good!”

“Do you have any idea about radical It`s an expression containing root sign like sq.
equation?” root, cube root etc.

“How do you find the solution of a radical (Students are thinking about the answer)
equation? Anyone?”

“To solve a radical equation, begin by isolating (the Students are listening)
a radical on one side of the equation, and then
raise both sides of the equation to the power
equal to the index of the radical.”

Examples:
Let us solve the radical expressions below.
1. √𝑥 + 2 = 3 (the Students are listening)
Solution:
Squaring both sides of the equation,
we get
2
(√𝑥 + 2) = (3)2
Simplify.
𝑥+2=9
Combined like terms
𝑥 = 9−2
𝑥=7
Check the solution obtained by
substituting it in the original equation.
√𝑥 + 2 = 3
√7 + 2 = 3
√9 = 3
3=3
2. 𝑥 = √𝑥 − 3𝑥 − 6
2

Solution: (the Students are listening)

Square both sides of the equation.
2
(𝑥)2 = (√𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 6)
Simplify
𝑥 2 = 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 6
Combined like terms
𝑥 2 − 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 = −6
3𝑥 = −6
𝑥 = −2
Check the solution obtained by
substituting it in the original equation.
𝑥 = √𝑥 2 = 3𝑥 − 6
−2 = √(−2)2 − 3(−2) − 6
−2 = √4 + 6 − 6
−2 = 2
Since =2 does not satisfy the original
equation, it is not a solution, and is
called an extraneous root. Hence, the
given equation has no solution.

“Is it necessary to check all the “Yes!”

solutions in the original equation when
solving radical equation”

3. 3√𝑥 − 2 = √2𝑥 + 3 (the Students are listening)

Solution:
Square both sides of the equation.
2 2
(3√𝑥 − 2) = (√2𝑥 + 3)
Simplify
9(𝑥 − 2) = 2𝑥 + 3
Combined like terms
9𝑥 − 18 = 2𝑥 + 3
9𝑥 − 2𝑥 = 3 + 18
7𝑥 = 21
𝑥=3
Check the solution obtained by
substituting it in the original equation.
3√𝑥 − 2 = √2𝑥 + 3
3√3 − 2 = √2(3) + 3
3√1 = √6 + 3
3(1) = √9
3=3
“None”
“Do you have any question about the topic?”

D. Application/ Group Activity

Teacher Activities Student Activities
“Now let`s try. Let`s have a pair activity, find (Students getting their partners and paper
your partner and solve the equation in ½ also.)
sheet of paper.”

Questions: Answers:
1. 5 − 2√𝑥 = 2 Isolate the term containing the radical.
−2√𝑥 = 2 − 5
Square both side.
−2√𝑥 = −3
Simplify.
2
(−2√𝑥) = (−3)2
4𝑥 = 9
9 3
𝑥 = 𝑜𝑟
4 2
Checking:
Check the solution obtained by
substituting it in the original equation.

5 − 2 √𝑥 = 2
3
5 − 2( ) = 2
2
5−3=2
2=2
2. √𝑥 + 5 = 𝑥 + 5 Square both sides.
2
(√𝑥 + 5) = (𝑥 + 5)2
Simplify.
𝑥 + 5 = 𝑥 2 + 10𝑥 + 25
Combined like terms.
0 = 𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 + 20
Factor.
0 = (𝑥 + 5)(𝑥 + 4)
Zero-Product Property
𝑥+4=0
𝑥 = −4

𝑥+5=0
𝑥 = −5

D. Values Integration

Critical Thinking: Solutions to problems must be checked to fit the real or actual situation.

E. Generalization

Teacher Activities Student Activities

“What is Radical Equation?” “Equations containing radicals with variables
in the radicands.”

“How to solve radical equations?” To solve radical equations:

1. Isolate a radical expression on one
side of the equation.
2. Raise both sides of the equation to
the index power to eliminate the
radical.
3. Always check the solutions obtained
in the original equation. There are
cases when solution are extraneous
and have to be discarded.

F. Assessment
Teacher Activities Student Activities

The teacher give the short quiz. (The students will answer the following
questions on their quiz pad.)

Questions: Answer:
1. √𝑥 + 1 = 5 √𝑥 + 1 = 5
2
(√𝑥 + 1) = (5)2
𝑥 + 1 = 25
𝑥 = 25 − 1
𝑥 = 24
Checking:
√24 + 1 = 5
√25 = 5
5 =5

2. √2𝑥 + 1 − √𝑥 − 3 = 2 Answer:
√2𝑥 + 1 − √𝑥 − 3 = 2
2 2
(√2𝑥 + 1) = (√𝑥 − 3 + 2)
2𝑥 + 1 = 𝑥 − 3 + 4√𝑥 − 3 + 4
𝑥 + 1 − 𝑥 + 3 − 4 = 4√𝑥 − 3
𝑥 = 4√𝑥 − 3
2
(𝑥)2 = (4√𝑥 − 3)
𝑥 2 = 16 (𝑥 − 3)
𝑥 2 − 16𝑥 + 48 = 0
(𝑥 − 12)(𝑥 − 4) = 0
𝑥 = 4 & 𝑥 = 12

Answer:
3. √𝑥 + 1 + √7𝑥 + 4 = 3
√𝑥 + 1 + √7𝑥 + 4 = 3
2

(√𝑥 + 1 + √7𝑥 + 4 ) = (3)2

𝑥 + 1 + √7𝑥 + 4 = 9
√7𝑥 + 4 = 9 − 𝑥 − 1
√7𝑥 + 4 = 8 − 𝑥
2
(√7𝑥 + 4) = (8 − 𝑥)2
7𝑥 + 4 = 64 − 16𝑥 + 𝑥 2
𝑥 2 − 23𝑥 + 60 = 0
(𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 − 20) = 0
𝑥 = 3 & 𝑥 = 20
