DESIGN OF CANTILEVER BEAM

Cantilever Beam

A cantilever is a beam supported at only one end. The beam transfers the load to the support as
bending moment and shear stress. Moment of force is the tendency of a force to twist or rotate an
object. Shear stress is defined as a stress which is applied parallel to the face of a material.
Cantilever construction allows for overhanging structures without external bracing/ support
pillars. Cantilevers can also be constructed with trusses or slabs. Cantilever construction is
famous in many kinds of architectural design and also provided in bridges.

Numerical Problem #1

Design a cantilever beam of span 3m subjected to u.d.l of 10 kN/m. Use M20 grade
concrete and Fe415 steel. Design as per L.S.M.
Given Data:
fck = _____ N/mm².
fy = ______N/mm².
Super imposed load UDL = ______ kN/m.
Span (l) = ____ m.

For Fe_____ steel;

_______

Span/depth ratio:

From IS456:2000, p: (Cantilever)

Effective depth, d = _______ mm.

Adopt overall depth of the beam, D = ______ mm at the fixed end.

The depth can be reduced to _____ mm (min. is 150mm) at the free end where the
B.M will be zero.
 Provide width of beam, b as

Effective span (le) = clear span for cantilever beam (l) = _______ mm.
Assume effective cover = _______ mm.
Actual effective depth d = _____________________ mm.

Loads and B.M calculation:

(i) Self weight of beam = b*(d1+d2)/2 *l*25 = __________________

= _________________ kN/m.

Calculate centroid from fixed end =

(ii) Super imposed load = ________ kN/m

Total load w = ____________ kN/m

Assume factor of safety = _________

Factored B.M at fixed end Mu = _____________________________________

_______________________________________________________________kNm
Check for effective depth required:
Assume Mu = Mu.limit
Mu.limit = ________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________

dreq = ______ mm. Compare with dprovided

Determine xu =
________________________________________________________

Compare with xumax.

Hence the section is an __________________________________________________

Calculation of area of steel:

Mu = _______________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________

 Ast = ___________ mm²

Check for min and max Ast:

Min Ast = ________________________________________ mm2.

Max Ast = ________________________________________ mm2.

Assume diameter of bars ɸ = ____________ mm

No. of bars n = _______________

 Provide _______________________________ at the top.

Check for deflection:

Actual l/d = 3000/460 =6.52
Allowable l/d = (basic l/d)*β*γ*δ*λ
β = 1, δ=1, λ=1
γ = modification factor for percentage of steel and stress in steel is given by
% steel = ___________________________________
Stress in steel = 0.85*fy*(Ast required / Ast provided)
= ____________________________________________

From Fig. 4 of IS 456,γ = __________

Basic l/d= 7 for cantilevers (clause 23.2.1)
Allowable l/d= 7* γ = ___________________. Compare with actual l/d

Hence the section is _______________________________________

Check for shear:
Factored Shear force at the fixed end = __________________________________________

= ____________________________ kN

Nominal shear stress τv = __________________________________ (For beams of varying

depth)
τv =______________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________

For _____ % steel and M20 grade concrete

find design shear strength τc = _________ N/mm²

Compare τc and τv ___________________________.

Hence provide ____________________ shear reinforcements.

Assume 8mm ɸ 2-legged vertical stirrups

Spacing sv = ________________________________________________________________

= _________________________ mm.

Check for Max. Spacing = (i) 0.75 d = ____________________________________

(ii) 300 mm
 provide 2-legged 8 mm ɸ vertical stirrups @ _______ mm c/c through-out .

Check for development length Ld:

Ld= Φσs/4τbd = _________________________________ mm
