PROCEDURES

1. Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure a healthy maintenance and readiness of the fire extinguisher available at
i engineering.

2. Scope

This procedure applies to all locations supported with fire extinguishers.

3. References

4. Abbreviations and Definitions

QHSE Representative= A position nominated having the responsibility to oversee the operational aspects of implementing
quality management Environmental, health, safety and wellbeing initiatives, policies and procedures.
Approved / Competent Person= An approved person is a qualified person qualified to undertake explicit firefighting work.
Licensed Contractors= An approved/qualified service provider to replace and maintain fire extinguisher in good status.
EHS= Environmental Health and Safety

5. Responsibility

5.1 Responsibilities of QHSE Representative and Approved Person


It is the responsibility of the QHSE representative and the approved person to:
• Perform the required monthly inspection on portable fire extinguishers as required;
• Mounting appropriate brackets and extinguishers;
• Replacing inoperable or missing fire extinguishers upon being notified after an annual fire/general safety review
• Notifying Environmental, Health and Safety in the event of a change in building fire loads or occupancy; and
• Upon being notified, replacing portable fire extinguishers with appropriate types when fire loads and/or occupancies
change;

5.2 Responsibilities of QHSE Representative


• Scheduling and coordinating with a licensed contractor the required annual inspection and maintenance and
hydrostatic testing of portable fire extinguishers; and
• Surveying the entire campus for extinguisher selection and distribution during fire/general safety reviews.

5.3 Responsibilities of the licensed contractors


• Performing annual maintenance and hydrostatic testing of portable fire extinguishers when scheduled; and
• Exchanging portable fire extinguishers when inoperable or discharged.

5.4 Fire extinguishers disposal


5.4.1 To dispose of an old fire extinguisher that cannot be recharged or that you do not wish to keep:
• Release any pressure contained in the canister by shooting a small amount into an open area
• Let the canister sit for a few days, making sure the pressure has been released
• Once there is no longer any pressure, dispose in a trash bag and seal it well
• Contact the licensed contractor for disposal and ensure it was disposed as per the environmental legal
requirement.

6. Policy

All portable fire extinguishers, shall be distributed, maintained, inspected and tested.

7. Procedure

7.1 Monthly Inspection


Monthly Inspection shall include a check of the following:

• Extinguisher is in the proper place;


• Confirm the extinguisher is not obstructed;
• All seals and pins are in place and have not been removed;
• Check gauge to ensure that the pressure is within the operable range;
• Examine the extinguisher for obvious signs of physical damage, leakage; and
• Ensure that a current service tag is present on extinguishers.

7.2 Annual Maintenance


All portable fire extinguishers shall have an annual maintenance check completed by a licensed contractor.

7.3 Exchange Program


The QHSE Representative and/or the approved person shall contact the licensed contractor for exchanging and/ or
maintaining fire extinguishers.

7.4 Selection
The following shall determine what type of portable fire extinguisher is needed to extinguish a specific type of fire:

7.4.1 Water Fire Extinguisher


To be used on:
• Wood
• Paper
• Textiles
Don’t use on:
• Flammable liquid
• Live electrical equipment

7.4.2 Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher


To be used on:
• Wood
• Paper
• Textiles
• Live electrical equipment
• Gaseous fire

7.4.3 Foam Fire Extinguisher


To be used on:
• Wood
• Paper
• Textiles
Don’t use on:
• Live electrical equipment

7.4.4 CO2 Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher


To be used on:
• Flammable liquid
• Live electrical equipment
Don’t use a CO2 Carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher in a confined place.

7.4.5 Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher
