OBJECTIVES

1. To describe and demonstrate the operation of an FSK modem

2. To describe and demonstrate the operation of a two-phase DPSK and a dibit DPSK modem
CONCLUSION

 In the transmit section of an FSK Modem, digital signals from DTE enters the TXD (Transmit
Data) input and will be modulated in the FSK MODULATOR. The modulated signal is filtered
for transmission using TRANSMIT FILTER and exits from the ATO (Analog Transmit Output).
On the other hand, the bit clock signal from the DTE is applied to the TRANSMIT DPLL to
synchronize with the internal transmit clock .
 In the receive section of the FSK Modem, the analog input enters the RAI (Receive Analog Input)
and will be filtered using the RECEIVE FILTER. The RFO (Receive Filter Output) will be
combined with the RDI (Receive Demodulator Input). The result will be amplified and
demodulated. Lastly, the signal will be produced from the RXD (Receive Data) pin. If a carrier
signal is detected from the RAI, the CARRIER DETECTION will output a logic 1 to the DCD
(Data Carrier Detect).
 The RCLK is derived by the clock recovery from the RDI. Since FSK only uses
ASYNCHRONOUS Detection, RCLK frequency is 16 times the bit rate.
 CONTROL and MODE SELECTION circuitry uses four switches as an external inputs (CM 4,
19, 18 and 17) to configure the modem.
 In two-phase DPSK, phase is measured in two bit successive bit times to determine the phase
change.
 In dibit DPSK, twice as many bits are transmitted in the same period so, baud rate is twice the bit
rate.
 In the transmit section of an DPSK Modem, data from DTE enters the TXD input and transport to
asynchronous-to-synchronous converter. The output will then drive the scrambler, which
produces a continuously changing bit pattern if the input is continuous strings of ones or zeroes.
This scramble can be enabled or disabled (wherein signals are bypassed) using SEI (Scrambler
Enable Input). Then, signals will be modulated in the dibit DPSK modulator then filtered for
transmission using transmit filter and exits from the ATO.
 In the receive section of the DPSK Modem, the analog input enters the RAI. It will be filtered
using the receive filter and output to RFO. The output will combine with the RDI and will be
amplified. The receiver decoder output will be descrambled if SEI is enabled and lastly, signal
will drive the synchronous-to-asynchronous converter and produced from the RXD pin. If SEI is
disabled, the receiver decoder output will be directed to TEST pin. Then, if a carrier signal is
detected from the RAI, the carrier detection will output a logic 1 to the DCD (Data Carrier
Detect).
