Triple Talaq

INTRODUCTION
1. Triple Talaq is a methodology of giving a divorce under sharia law( lawmaking body for
Islam) where a man can say Talaq, Talaq, Talaq to his wife in a row and it will lead to
divorce.
2. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights of Marriage) Bill to make instant triple talaq
illegal and void was passed by Lok Sabha.

BODY
1. Any pronouncement of triple talaq by a person upon his wife, by words, either spoken or
written or in electronic form or in any other manner, shall be void and illegal.
2. Triple talaq will be a crime punishable with three years in jail and a fine.
3. Triple talaq is not universal among Muslims.
4. Many Islamic nations including Bangladesh, Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia and Tunisia
have regulated this.
5. Triple talaq adversely impact rights of women and their dignity. It is against constitutional
principles such as gender equality, secularism, etc.
6. The new bill against triple talaq significantly empowers Muslim women.
7. The law is about justice and respect for women and is not about any religion or community.
8. It protects the rights of Muslim women against arbitrary divorce.
9. Instant triple talaq is viewed as sinful and improper by a large section of the community
itself.
10. However, the practice of triple talaq has continued despite the Supreme Court order
terming it void.

CONCLUSION
1. The Uniform Civil Code is important for national integration and gender equality.
2. The law has to be such that it respects the diversity and religious sentiments of the citizens
and does not go against the tenets of secularism.
