Career Capstone and Leadership
Date – December13th, 2019
Introduction

I have been doing my co-op in Radisson Toronto Airport West from 3rd of
September as a Housekeeper in Mississauga. I mostly work for four days Thursday,
Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 9 to 5.30pm. Sometimes I also stay till 7pm if there
are more rooms and I also help in other works related to guest services. Mr.
Prashanth is our hotel Manager and our housekeeping Supervisor is Olivia who
gives us our whole day’s schedule.
We work from morning to evening and I reach at hotel before 9am. We are
usually 4-5 persons work daily and on weekends we are more than 5. Early- morning
we have to stock up our carts and one cart for bed-sheets. When I started my work
in Radisson found it so hard because of time management and perfection. It took me
time to grab all the techniques to make this work easier for me. On the very first day
they sent me with one of my co-worker who is more experienced than others and
she gave me very good training with her experience. One day she gave me training
for rooms and on the other day for washrooms.

Professional and Ethical Behaviour in the Workplace

Work environment at Radisson hotel is so professional. We always take


professionalism of this hotel as our responsibility and show proper etiquettes to the
guest. As we all use English as it our common and professional language to speak
and whenever we meet guests, we greet them and if anyone needs any help and.
We first work on guest satisfaction whatever they expect from us we have to do for
them. First is the language understanding and second neat and clean rooms where
they can live comfortably and can enjoy their vacations.
As Radisson is also 3star hotel and whatever should be in a 3star hotel we try
to provide beyond those to customers. We have a particular dress code of black
pants and black jacket that is provided to all staff members and everyone should be
in their respective dress. Moreover, it is not allowed to be there without our dress
code. We always work on the quality of everything it does not matter if it takes more
time.
We usually support each other if any of our co-worker is in need or they are
not done with their work. Who so ever finish their work go to help the other co-
worker. For any organisation or institution to develop co-operation is very much
necessary. Although it is important to complete the work on time but quality at work
is much more important for the reputation of any hotel. Because guests can see how
much time was taken to clean the room but rooms should be completely tide well
equipped with all the gadgets and other necessary things for the guests.

Goal Setting
According to me hotel industry is the best option to start a goal to achieve. Most of
the people higher position start their goal from being a Housekeeper. As I want to
mention the person under whom we are working, she used to be a housekeeper like
us in Radisson and been there for 2-3 year and became a housekeeping Supervisor
and now she is an Executive Manager and she is also Supervising us. So, I also take
it as my goal to be at a managerial position. It is not difficult but needs courage and
hard work to reach at your goal.

Your role in the work


I play my role their well. I do not consider myself there as a student who is
doing his co-op there instead I include myself there as an employee, although I am
not get paid for this job. I keep my attitude always positive there and follow the ethics
of hotel. Everyday, I go there to grab something new and always try to get the
feedback positive for me. I like the work environment where we do our duties as a
team, do co-operate each other and always look to explore something new.
Well, I learn so many things from others. We also exchange our cultural
values and beliefs as we meet people who are from other countries who are our
guests and our co-workers. We socialize with them and ask questions about their
traditions and they also talk to me about my traditions. So many marriages or other
ceremonies are held in hotel we come in contact with those. I got some skills as to
be on time, work on quality and communication skills. I will definitely miss this
workplace environment when I will leave this place.

Career development:
It is a good opportunity to work in a hotel to develop our career. You get
everything that shows you a new path for development. So many times you are done
through different kind of evaluations and feedbacks where you get something to
learn that also serves you a path of promotions. Hotels industry is the biggest
industry where you are surrounded with so many things and get benefitted in your
future.
In career development every time you need help, support, advice and
guidance which can be only done through communication with the people who are at
upper position than you. I learnt a lot in these four months regarding my future. We
usually had meetings where we were evaluated with the work we were doing and get
feedback according to that which must be helpful for us when we will be doing job in
the hospitality industry. We can plan our career with the help of 5 W’s and 1H. What,
When, Where, Why, Who and How.

Examine workplace relations:

At work we come in contact with so many people and in diversity of people


there is so much to learn and we know about people and their behaviour what
things affect them. We also know behaviour of our management and how they guide
us. How our relations are with them and what would be in the future. I have almost
very good relations with all the employees of Radisson although they are working at
front desk, Kitchen, maintenance or in my own department.
Firstly, when I enter in the hotel I firstly interact with people at front desk I
greet them and get keys from them then go to basement where I change my dress
and go to make our carts ready. Then we talk to our supervisor. Then in between
that I also get chance to interact with our P.A Arvin, maintenance worker Amanpreet
singh, and 3-4 other smembers who always work in laundry. On daily basis we meet
a lot of guests who are from different countries. Some of them are the guests who
frequently visit our hotel and stay for long days.
We usually communicate with each other and learn a lot from each other. I
always used to be curious for other people’s work as well. Where there was a lot to
learn. I earned so many relations with people working over there. They all are so
good.

Leadership at work:

It is an important topic to relate with my placement. For me it was a great


opportunity to develop leadership qualities. Being leader in some tasks gives me an
opportunity to push myself in future to explore more my career or to get better career
opportunities. This four month placement definitely developed excellence leadership
kills in me. Mostly, I took every task as a challenge for me. I try to follow all the
instructions and try to lead everyday. I started from step good and try to reach myself
at best. It includes all the steps from goal setting, vision, risk taking and team
building. All the people who were working over there are an inspiration for me to get
a skill of leadership at work.

Conclusion
To conclude, I would say, this was a good and totally new opportunity for me
to accomplish my placement in better way. Although, I worked at so many places
and has experience of customer service face to face. But here in Radisson I got a
professional behaviour and how to deal in a professional and ethical environment,
about goal setting and communication. I played an equal role at this workplace.
Seeing so many people who are my co-workers helps me in career development and
I get know to know about relationship with the worker and how we can co-operate
each other in thick and thin situations and work in a team and how to be your own
leaders. Overall, it was good to work over there although I had some obstacles as
nobody cares about your emotions. They just need work and work you have to care
yourself. we can not expect it from management. I always gave my best although our
supervisor sometimes gets irritate from me. I am in the last days of my placement
and It was mixed experience for me as well. There were so many things to learn.
