TERMINAL PAPER #2

I.

It is well-known fact that parents are what shape children into developing their

character; however that will not always be the case. As there will come a time that

the children will have to experience the world and that starts at school. How they

grow even further will likely depend on how they are treated by their early childhood

teachers.

This is what this study aims to determine, the whether the values present in the teacher

will have an effect to their competency in teaching young students, specifically, those

teachers from Tuguegarao. This will attempt to determine the correlation of a teacher’s

work values and their overall teaching performance (Research Question); whether the

values that they carry to them to work will mean a better learning experience for

students.

Most of the studies reviewed are about the performances of teachers from regions in

Mindanao such as that of Somblingo (2014) about teachers in Zamboanga and Biong

(2014) about the competency of teachers in the College of Education in Mindanao.

However the most relevant study comes from the journals of the DepEd itself such as

the one written by the Teacher Education Council about different experience-driven

learning courses.

The study used a descriptive-correlational approach to determine the relation of work

values and teaching performance and used the random sampling method to determine

their respondents which turned out to be 40 early childhood educators in the division of

Tuguegarao city. As an instrument, the researchers used a Filipino Work Value Scale

designed by Vicentila Cervera.

TERMINAL PAPER #2

In its conclusion, the study stated that there is no significant difference in work values

when compared using profile variables. In addition, it is revealed that work values do

not affect the respondents’ performances.

TERMINAL PAPER #2

REVIEW PROPER

This study used a lot of variables to create a profile or pattern of the educator’s values

(in this case, what motivates them to pursue teaching especially to young children) to

determine their performance in teaching. Such variables were used: Environmental,

Familial, Intellectual-Achievement, etc.

For reference, the researchers created a chart:

Work Values Interpretation

Very Strong Average Weak Very
Strong Weak
Environmental 42-45 39-40 35-38 34 27-33
Familial 23-25 20-22 19 15-18 11-14
Intellectual- 54-55 52-53 49-51 46-48 37-45
Achievement Oriented

Interpersonal 60-65 56-58 53-55 47-52 39-45

Managerial 33-35 31-32 29-30 27-28 24-26
Material 39-40 37-38 35-36 33-34 24-32
Occupational 49-50 48 46-47 44-45 37-43
Organizational 26-30 23-25 20-22 0 0
Religious 31-35 29-30 25-27 23-24 21 and
Below
Variety 19-20 18 17 15-16 11-13

Despite the factors presented, however, the values that they possess had no significant

effect to the teaching performance of the teachers. They concluded that positive work

values do not always lead to a higher performance. The researchers also found that

more teachers have better performances when they do it for their own personal means.

The research focused more on information found on handbooks by the Department of

Education. Some studies that were cited were studies about the area of Education in the

regions of Mindanao. This helped to validate their point as it is recent and is local to

their area.

In their conclusion, they found that there was no relation between their two variables;

however they made it a point to use the study as a reference for the use of evaluating

teachers who would enter the same field.

TERMINAL PAPER #2

CRITIQUING

I personally find it unfortunate to come to a null conclusion; however, the data that they

provided will surely prove to be useful for other studies within the same area of

discussion. They conclude that teachers’ performances are driven by their own personal

desires and that bringing a positive work values do not have anything to do with their

performance. That being said, with full knowledge of the area wherein the study was

conducted, a different setting may produce different results as an urban setting would

have teachers who are motivated by different factors that are not solely personal. But I

will leave that to the researchers.

The literature on the other hand was relevant to the topic as there is no better source for

information regarding education than the government sector that manages it. However,

they could somehow add studies about the values of teachers from places that are

impoverished to test whether the same values hold up for teachers that operate in those

areas. Surely, they will have a different approach towards teaching there. As well as

studies regarding the differences of teachers from Public and Private schools.

Their information however can prove to be a valuable for the screening of new teachers.

To find out what values that they hold could be a criterion in profiling possible teachers

to determine early on what type of performance they would display.

The references were cited accordingly, organized in the order that they were referenced.

They also followed the standard APA citation style.

TERMINAL PAPER #2

IMPLICATIONS

This is a very good study to determine what motivates, not only teachers, but people in

general to perform well in their jobs. This particular study may have only focused on

teachers but the same variables can be applied to any profession. Any employer could

add the factors that were talked about into the application process of new employees as

to ensure that they will be competent in doing their jobs.

The study itself proves to be a great tool for us to know what would motivate someone

to work in order to utilize their full capabilities in the workplace.
