1 PURPOSE:
 The purpose of this procedure is to carry out concreting works at site and to ensure that
proper quality control and quality assurance is achieved at DHDT NUMALIGARH Project.

2 SCOPE:
 This procedure covers the various steps involved in executing plain, Reinforced & liquid
retaining structure concreting works for various structures like foundation, pedestals, column,
slabs, precast elements etc. including curing, testing, finishing and repairing of concreting in
DHDT Unit.

4 RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DESIGNATED IN CHARGE

 Resident Construction Manager: He shall be responsible for overall management of all


construction activities at site.
 Construction Manager: Construction Manager is responsible for monitor the daily construction
activities at site.
 Safety Engineer: Safety Engineer shall be responsible for safety of all persons involved in the
job.

 QA/ QC Engineer: QA/ QC Engineer shall be responsible for site QA/ QC activities, non-
conformance management and compilation of records

 Field Engineers: Field Engineers shall be responsible for the site construction activities and
implementation of all plans following safety & quality standards.

5 MATERIALS

FINE AGGREGATE

 Aggregate for concrete shall be in accordance with IS 383


 It shall be hard, dense and durable, free from impurities like dust, clay lumps
and any other deleterious matter
 Sampling and testing shall be as per IS 2386
 The total percentage by weight of deleterious substances in sand shall not
exceed. 5% for uncrushed sand and 2% for crushed sand
 The fineness modulus shall be between 2.2 and 3.2

COURSE AGGREGATE

 Aggregate for concrete shall be in accordance with IS 383


 Coarse aggregate shall be granular or crystalline surface shall be free from
elongated, flaky or laminated pieces
 Total percentage of deleterious substances in the coarse aggregate shall not
exceed 5% for both crushed and uncrushed aggregates
 Unless otherwise specifically stated on the drawings, the maximum size of
coarse aggregate shall be 20mm, but in no case greater than ¼ of the
minimum thickness of the member
 Aggregates delivered at site in wet condition or becoming wet due to rain or
any other means, shall be used by adjusting the moisture content to achieve
the desired mix.

CEMENT:
 Cement will be Ordinary Portland cement or Portland Pozzolona cement as mentioned in
tender document for super structure and sub structure concrete work. Cement will be stored

in go-downs/Silos at site/Batching plant to protect from dampness and will be made easily
accessible for proper inspection and accounting.
 Cement received at site for the work shall have MTC.

 Sample of each week number shall be tested at field laboratory for consistency, Setting time
and compressive strength.

CURING COMPOUND:
 As alternate arrangement, Curing compound shall be used of approved make in consultation
with EIC. Every batch certificate shall be verified by EIL and accepted through material
Inspection report (IMIR).

STEEL
 Tor steel reinforcement shall be procured from approved manufacturer for cement concrete
works conforming to high yield strength deformed steel bars of Gr. Fe 500 of IS: 1786 and
co related with MTC (Manufacturer’s test certificate) and Challan issued by manufacturer.
 Material shall be accepted based on manufacturer’s test certificate and review of
certificates/test reports and other documents like delivery order, delivery challan etc. MTC
will be produced for all types of reinforcement steel and for all the consignments coming to
site.
 All reinforcement bars will be clean and free from dirt, oil, paints, grease, mill scales and
loose rust. Bar bending schedule will be prepared before cutting.

WATER
 The water used for concrete work shall be clean and free from harmful chemicals and
organic material. To ascertain the same, a sample of water will be tested in any of the
approved laboratories prior to the commencement of work and later on in case if any visible
change is found. The water shall be in general conforming to the requirement of IS
456:2000.

 It shall be clean and fresh, free from oils, acids, alkalis or other deleterious
material whether in solution or in suspension.

ADMIXTURE

 Admixture used shall comply with IS 9103.

6 GRADE OF CONCRETE
 Grade of concrete shall be as per drawing

7 TYPE OF CONCRETE MIX


 Unless otherwise specified or mentioned in drawings, all leveling concrete, lean concrete
and filling concrete shall be “NOMINAL MIX CONCRETE” and all structural concrete
shall be of “DESIGN MIX CONCRETE” as defined in IS 456. However all concrete
works of grade M5, M7.5, M10, M15 shall always is NOMINAL MIX CONCRETE. Or mix
design shall be converted to nominal mix.

7.1 NOMINAL MIX CONCRETE


 Nominal mix concrete shall be prepared without preliminary test, by adopting the
proportions by mass as per clause 9 of IS 456.

7.2 DESIGN MIX CONCRETE


 Mix design shall be established ahead of start of work & concrete grade shall be as
designated in drawing (if required trail mix to be established at site/Batching plant before
producing the concrete).
 Mix Design shall be done at laboratory approved by EIL/ Field lab set up.
 Mix design shall be done for each grade of concrete.
 All mix design shall be done in presence of EIL representative if carried out in Field lab
set up.
 The procedure given in Indian standard recommended guidelines for concrete mix
design IS 10262 & SP 23 shall be followed.

 Plasticizing admixtures may be added to concrete as per Approved manufacturer’s


instructions to improve the slump without impairing the specified strength.
 The concrete mix so designed shall be tested and the results shall be submitted for EIC
approval as per the parameters of IS 456.

8 CONCRETE PRODUCTION.

 Availability of all approved ingredients to the required quantity shall be ensured


at Batching Plant before start of concrete.
 Concrete shall be supplied from Batching Plant after confirmation from site.
 The concrete shall be mixed at the Batching Plant as per the approved mix
design.
 Batching of ingredients shall be done in accuracy of +/- 2% of cement being
measured & within +/- 3 % of aggregate, Admixture & water being used as per
IS:456 (Clause 10.2.2 ).
 The moisture content of the coarse and fine aggregate shall be checked by the
QC Engineer @ Batching Plant and suitable adjustment made as per IS 456 on
daily basis.
 Batching plant calibration shall be done for every 3 months at site.
 The concrete shall be thoroughly mixed to achieve required workability at the
point of pouring.
 In hot weather, continuously cooling down drum of Transit mixer shall be done
by sprinkling water.

9 PLAIN CEMENT CONCRETE.

 For all PCC works, the concrete will be mixed in batching plant or at site using RM-800
Mixture machine with approval of EIL

 Before laying PCC, sub base at founding level shall be compacted as Per specification.
Compaction of lean concrete will be done manually using rammers.
 Formwork for PCC will be done using battens / wooden planks / Steel channels.

10 REINFORCED CEMENT CONCRETE.

 For all the RCC structures, bar bending schedule will be prepared as per drawings.
Batching of cement, coarse aggregates, sand and water will be done in batching
plant. The Engineer in charge will be informed about the concreting program well in
advance and the arrangement and availability of materials and necessary equipment
will be checked before calling for inspection. All information regarding a particular
concrete pour will be incorporated in Concrete program and inspection plan and the
concreting will commence only after due review of relevant QA document.

 The ingredients will be mixed in a mechanical mixer. Weigh batcher of batching plant
will measure the coarse and fine aggregates. The mixing time will not be less than 2
minutes for a mixer of 2 cum. capacity and 3 minutes for a mixer of capacity more
than 2 cum. The concrete will be transported and placed on a clean bed or directly in
the Formwork. Concrete will not be dropped from a height of more than 1.5 meter
and will be laid in position in horizontal layers. The concrete, after being laid will be
compacted using vibrators. The whole process will be completed before initial setting
takes place.
 Whenever a construction joint as per drawing to be provided in a monolithic structure,
bonding grooves will be formed in the concrete already laid and the surface will be
roughened, cleaned and given a wash of neat cement slurry before laying new
concrete as laid down in clause 12.4.1 of IS: 456.
 The construction joint shall be vertical in case of beams & slabs & shall be thoroughly
cleaned & hacked before resuming the concrete works. In case of construction joint, the joint
shall be covered with cement mortar of the ratio same as that of concrete mix, on the
same plane

10A. CONCRETE FOR LIQUID RETAINING STRUCTURES:


In case of concrete in liquid retaining structures (for RC.C works Minimum
cement 350kg/ cum and Max, w / c is 0.45) special precautions shall be taken for mix
design using waterproofing compound and a trial shall be done to ascertain the strength
of concrete. Special precautions shall be taken for the construction of these structures.
The work shall be done in accordance with the specifications together with IS; 3370 and
IS: 6494, but in case of conflict between the Indian Standard Codes and specifications,
the specifications will govern.
Special effort shall be provided to avoid construction joints as well as vertical
joints. In case joints are unavoidable prior information to be given to the concerned EIL
engineer. Joints shall be chipped off and properly cleaned and covered with cement
grout , before resuming the further pouring of concrete.
Water stops shall be provided as shown in the drawing and as per
manufacturer’s recommendations.
After concreting, the structure shall be tested for water tightness / leakage. In
case leakage is found further suitable treatment like injection grouting or inside water
proofing, to be provided to the concrete so as to make the structure water tight. For
checking water tightness water shall be filled in RCC Structure & observation shall be
taken after 24 hours for drop in water level. It shall not exceed 6 mm in 24 hours in case
of covered structure & 12 mm in case of open structure.
special precautions shall be taken to make the formwork joints leak
proof and surface free from pores.
In case concreting is done at expansion joint, then a non-absorbent
compressible sheet / Bituminous impregnated fibre board (as per IS;1838)/Dura
board, except top 12mm depth on water faces or as shown in the drawing, which shall be
filled with two parts liquid polysulphide sealant (as per IS:12118). In case of
contraction /construction joint, polysulphide sealant shall be used for 12mm depth on
water faces or as shown in the drawing, after making groove in the concrete.

All inserts, anchors, sleeves and all other embedded items shall be at site prior
to the start of concrete.

10.1 TRANSPORTING & HANDLING


 All concrete shall be conveyed from Batching Plant to site through transit mixer
and shall be poured at location either through pump or chute or manually or
direct depending on site condition like approach, lead, height, quantity, etc
 A delivery slip shall be sent with each load of concrete with details of grade, mix
details, quantity, date and time of dispatch etc.
 Slump and temperature shall be measured at Batching plant & place of pouring
 Method of concrete transportation shall not allow contamination, segregation or
loss of constituents to occur. Proper approaches and areas for concrete pumps
placing; unloading points etc. shall be decided as per site conditions and in such
a manner that there is minimum hindrance to other activities

10.2 PLACING

 The method of placing of concrete shall depend on the quantity of concrete, type
of structure, type of formwork etc.
 The concrete pour shall be checked for the position, level, proper
reinforcements, embedded parts, and adequacy of shuttering, Scaffolding etc &
Concreting shall be commenced on approval from engineer in charge.
 Concrete shall be laid in layers no greater than 400 mm, and each layer shall be
compacted using appropriate vibrators. Concrete shall not be moved horizontally
by vibration, and care taken to avoid segregation while pouring. Concrete shall
be placed while it is sufficiently plastic for full compaction. It shall be worked
around reinforcements and embedded items
 Placement of concrete shall continue until the completion of the concrete in one
pour to avoid cold joints in concrete unless construction joints are specified

 The maximum permissible free fall of concrete may be taken as 1.5 mts, In case
shuttering height more than 1.5 Mts shall be poured using boom placer.
 Mass concrete shall be planned and discussed with EIC well in advance,
separately with pour sequence, rate of pour, pumping arrangement and
vibrators as required
 Concrete shall be placed without segregation ,
 The concrete shall be placed in its final position and compacted before initial
setting time of concrete commences after first mixing of water, cement and
aggregates
 Water for use in mixing concrete and curing shall comply with the requirements
of IS 456
 Wherever construction, contraction and expansion joints occur in the water
retaining concrete structures as per drawings these joints shall be made
watertight.
 For Provision of Construction Joint at place other than mentioned in drawing
prior approval shall be taken from Engineer in charge.
 No wet concrete shall be placed in flowing water
 Concreting shall be carried out continuously up to construction joints
 Vertical construction joints shall be formed by the insertion of rigid stopping off
forms.
 Any remedial treatment to concrete surfaces shall be agreed with the company
Representative and shall be carried out without delay and before the application
of any curing membrane.
 Any concrete surface which is found improper shall be inspected by the
company Rep before treatment.

10.3 COMPACTION

 Concrete should be thoroughly compacted and fully worked around the reinforcement,
around embedded fixtures and into corners of the formwork.

 Concrete shall be compacted using mechanical vibrators complying with IS 2505, IS


2506, IS2514 & IS 4656. Over vibration and under vibration of concrete are harmful and
should be avoided. Vibration of very wet mixes should also be avoided.

 Whenever vibration has to be applied externally, the design of formwork and the
disposition of vibrators should receive special consideration to ensure efficient
compaction and to avoid surface blemishes.

10.4 CURING

 Curing is the process of preventing the loss of moisture from the concrete whilst
maintaining a satisfactory temperature regime. The curing regime shall also
prevent the development of high temperature gradients within the concrete.
 Curing compound of approved brand shall be applied in RCC Exposed surface
structure by spraying and brushing where ever water curing is not possible..
Curing compound shall confirm to the relevant IS code.
 Exposed surface of concrete shall be maintained continuously damp or wet
condition at least for7 days.

11 CEMENT WASH / CEMENT BASED WATER PROOFING PAINT.


 If not other wise provided with protective coating due to architectural and/ or
geotechnical requirements, All concrete elements ( whether cast in situ or precast )
Exposed to atmosphere shall be provided with 3 coats of cement based waterproof paint
as per IS 5410. Prior to application of the paint , The surface shall be prepared to
remove all foreign particles, loose materials, Extra deposited concrete lumps etc using
appropriate mechanical/manual means.

12 SEPERATION JOINT.

 Separation joint shall be obtained by using an approved alkathene sheet stuck on


Surface against which concrete shall be placed. Adequate care shall be taken to

 Expansion joints shall be provided at the locations and to the details shown on
Drawings, with the joints filled with approved joint filling material.

14 WATER STOPS.

 PVC water stops as per ElL Specification No. 6-68-0002 for materials shall be
accurately cut, fitted and integrally joined as per manufacturer's specifications
to provide a Continuous, watertight diaphragm at all points
 Water stops shall be provided at locations as shown in drawing.
 Adequate provision shall be made for the support and protection of water stops
during the
 Progress of the work. Damaged water stops shall be replaced and/or repaired
as directed

15 PROTECTION OF FRESHLY LAID CONCRETE.


 Newly placed concrete shall be protected, by approved means, from rain, sun
and wind. Concrete placed below the ground level shall be protected from
falling earth during and after placing.
 The ground water around newly poured Concrete shall be kept to an approved
level by pumping or other approved means of drainage and adequate steps
shall be taken to prevent floatation and flooding.

16 FIELD TEST.

 Grading test on fine and coarse aggregates shall be carried out as per IS: 2386
& frequency shall be as per ITP
 Slump cone shall be used to check the workability of concrete at batching plant
& site as per ITP
 Samples from fresh concrete shall be taken as per IS: 1199 and cubes shall be
made. cured and tested at 28 days in accordance with IS: 516.

 Generally 1 set of cube (6Nos), 3 cubes for 28 days testing (If required, 3 shall be tested
for 7 days ).
 Frequency of sampling shall be 1 set per 50 Cum or 50 batches whichever is greater
frequency of production of concrete for each Grade (as per clause no.6.3.2 of IS: 4926-
2003.
 Cube id shall be marked as per EIL Std 6-68-0004 Rev-6, clause no:15.3.6 as follows
First line: AF (Code Assigned By EIC)
Second line: XXXX(Unique integer starting from 0001, if required grade of concrete)
Third line: DD-MM-YEAR (Date of casting of cube)

17 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA.
 The concrete shall be deemed to comply with the strength requirement when both the
Conditions as given in Table-II of IS: 456 for that particular grade of concrete are
simultaneously met. Standard deviation during the routine concreting shall be taken for 30
cubes.
 If required, non destructive test shall be conducted, in case concrete sampling cube fails to
meet the acceptance criteria as mentioned in IS;456 Table -II

18 INSPECTION AND TESTING OF STRUCTURE.


 After the striking of the formwork, all concrete work shall be inspected for defects such as
honey-combed surfaces, rough patches; holes left by form bolts etc shall be repaired.
 Repair work shall be performed as soon as possible after the striking of forms so that the
concrete has not hardened completely.
 Areas of segregation, stone packets and other damaged areas shall be chipped and all
loose material removed with compressed air or by washing, taking care to remove all
water from the concrete. For larger repairs concrete shall be chipped out to a depth of
100-150 mm /as per requirement. Loose mortar shall scrub out by using wire brushes.
 Bonding of old concrete with the repair material shall be achieved by wetting the chipped
out surface and either sprinkling dry cement on the wet surface or by brushing a coat of
rich cement grout(1 cement : 1 sand) followed by the patch mortar for surface repairs, or

patch concrete for larger repairs. If required epoxy bondage shall be carried out for
repairing patches, which shall be applied as per manufacturer’s recommendation.

 The repaired area shall be cured by covering with a wet saturated material, for
a period of 24 hours. The subsequent curing of the repair by sprinkling water
shall continue for at least 7 days.

19 FORMWORK.

19.1 FORMWORK SCHEME.


 Form work schemes shall be prepared for all important structures
 Form work schemes shall describe the arrangement to be made for particular

 Form work scheme shall be prepared based on site requirements and the
L&T formwork system specification to resist all loads they will be subjected to
the RCC structure.
 Form work shall be constructed of new timber of soft of partially seasoned
Stock without any fissures and cracks
 Form work shall have sufficient strength to withstand the pressure resulting
from placement and vibration of concrete
 The tolerances on the shapes, lines and dimensions shown in the drawing
shall be in accordance to clause 11.1 of IS 456 and EIL STD 6-68-0004.

19.2 MAKING OF SHUTTERING PANNEL.

 Component material (steel, wooden or plywood) shall be selected as per the


drawing, structure, load and the finish required.
 Formwork shall be fabricated as per the drawing of form work schemes

 Fabricated formwork shall be staked in order and transported for erection as


per the sequence of work
 Formwork shall be cleaned for any concrete leftovers and other elements
detrimental to the concrete and its finish
 Release agents shall be applied to the minimum necessary to obtain a clean
release of the formwork
 Shuttering panels made up of Plywood with timber backed shall be used for at
least 6 times repetitions and steel board for 10 times repetitions.
19.3 FIXING/ERECTION OF FORM WORKS:
 Erect stagging/shuttering as per drawing/sketches in such a way that de
shuttering can be done easily including provision for re-propping, if being planned.
 All shutter and plates shall be adequately backed by sufficient number and size of
Walers or framework to ensure rigidity during concreting. Shuttering shall be
adequately strutted, braced and propped, to prevent deflection under deadweight
of concrete and superimposed live load of workmen, materials, plant to withstand
vibration. No joints in props shall be allowed.
 Vertical props shall be supported on wedges or other measures shall be taken
where the props can be gently lowered vertically during the removal of form work.
Props for an upper storey shall be placed directly over those in the immediately
below, and the lowest props shall bear on a sufficiently strong area.
 Care shall be taken that all formwork is set plumb and true to line, level, camber
or batter where required and as specified.
 When reinforcement passes through the formwork, care should be taken to
ensure close fitting joins against the steel bars, so as to avoid loss of fines during
the compaction of concrete.
 Surfaces of forms in contact with concrete shall be oiled with mould oil of
approved quality or clean diesel oil. The use of oil, which darkens the surface of
concrete, shall not be allowed. Oiling shall be done before reinforcement has

been placed and care shall be taken that no oil comes in contact with
reinforcement, while it is being placed in position.
 Before concreting is commenced, the formwork shall be carefully examined to
ensure the following:
1 Removal of all dirt, sawdust and other unwanted material by brushing and
blowing air.
2 The correct location of tie bars, bracing and spacers, and especially
Connections of bracing.

 Form work shall be continuously watched during the process of concreting. If


During concreting any weakness develops and formwork shows any distress,
Necessary remedial action shall be taken.

19.4 DISMANTLING OF FORMWORK.


 Formwork shall be released only after specified periods as per the IS 456
clause no 11.3.1 OF IS: 456.

 Tolerances for formed surfaces shall follow IS 456 clause no 15.3.9.7 &
15.3.9.8 and EIL STD 6-68-0004,Rev-6
 Where props are required by the specification to continue to provide support
after the general striking of formwork they shall remain undisturbed till their
final removal.
 Formwork shall be removed without causing damage or deflection to the
concrete.
 The PVC cone used for alignment of wall shutters shall be removed from the
concrete and ends of the conduit pipes shall be sealed and cone portion shall
be grouted with mortar. Care shall be taken to match the appearance of the
repaired portion to the color of the concrete poured.

19.5 MECHANICAL CONNECTION.
 The mechanical splices in reinforcement by means of couplers, clamps etc.
shall be used (as per manufacturer's specifications) with the written approval of
the Engineer-in-Charge.
 However, tests shall be made as directed by Engineer-in-Charge to prove that
such connections are of the full strength of the bars on trial joints

20 PRECAST ELEMENTS.
 The appropriate area shall be selected for casting precast elements the

 Form work for precast elements shall be done as per clause 18.
 A part of form work may be of fixed form work made of concrete / steel to

 Reinforcement & lifting hook shall be provided as shown in drawings
 The relocation and lifting of pre-cast members shall be done only after 7
Days of casting
 Transportation of pre-cast elements shall be done using appropriate size of
Vehicle.
 All the precast elements shall be given appropriate protection while
Transportation to avoid any kind of damage to the elements
 Care shall be taken during erection without causing shock, Vibration or
