Introduction

Rationale

English has developed over the course of more than 1,400 years. English is

quite known even the adolescence in the contrary Speaking in English is known to

worldwide especially communicating with other people. Social Media, The

Modernized citizens are also familiar with English Even the adolescence despite

living in a country with no English involved they can still learn English as their

second language. Children do silly things imitating their favourite character despite

have different accent, lack of words, they did for their pleasure.

There are problems worldwide related to English especially the speaking

skills, currently the students who are not superior to speak with English example in

the Asian continent. The students with the lack of knowledge suddenly lost their

motivation, courage and especially confidence due to the effects of speaking in

English. Some may see this a simple matter of problem but students or adolescence

have struggles with speaking to another -------, some have struggles in their studies

relative to speaking in English. The students are currently dealing with the

problems on their own without any consent or receiving any advice.


In todays century, University of Cebu Maritime Education Training Center

students are struggling with speaking in English but they lost their motivation

when speaking in English since they see themselves as not suitable when speaking

in English so they abandon the way of speaking and find their way to learn their

lessons through their 1st or cultural language. The students are learning and inhabit

their way to learn on what they are being taught but English is not their specialty,

The students of University of Cebu Maritime Education Training Center students

are only learning that is important for their future career but speaking in English is

their obstacle since their cultural language is the only language that they are

confident when speaking but it is unacceptable for teachers since speaking in

English is part of learning.

The purpose of this research is to know and discover the reason why do

some students lack their confidence English speaking skills. The recent stress and

anti-socialization of people or speaking in English, The research is about how

students that can speak with English competency, The research is knowing the

ability and confidence to speak. There are multiple ways in solving the lack of

competency and confidence, The research is to also concern with the students who

has small knowledge and experience about communicate with others and build

relationship when speaking in English with the right pronunciation and correct
vocabulary with English among the students in University of Cebu Maritime

Education Training Center.


Theoretical Background of the Study

This research is anchored on the theory of johnmarshall Reeve(2012) which

is the Self-determination theory applied to educational settings. Theory and the

thrust of most universities which is University of Rochester Press, 2002.

The research of Johnmarshall Reeve(2012) is based on an individual who

has no confidence in speaking an English which is why the author developed a

theory for a certain individual by applying self-determination theory(SDT).

Learning the Behaviors that can benefit a students by anticipating the effects on

perceptions of self-determination and competence. The lack of confidence due to

speaking can even effects the students can causes a student to no longer have

confidence and not taking the education more properly.

This study is anchored to another theory, Stephen Krashen's (1998) Theory

of Second Language. This theory is Focused on acquisition also known as

something or someone acquired or gained. Learning what the students that are

being taught is sent to their memories and beginning to have it as a muscle memory

specifically being to be get used to is being passed down but acquisition is gaining

the ability, Gain or possess the ability to speak in English.

The summary of the Theory of Stephen Krashen's (1998) is of what

was Being Taught to Adapt and what was being Taught to learn.
Statement of the problem

This study aims the effect of speaking in English competency to be undergo

with grade 11 students in UC-METC this study will be conducted during 2nd

semester of grade 11 students in December 2019-2020, the results of study or

research will be shown in the later schedule of the students.

Specifically this study seeks to answer the following questions

1. Do students have any fear of criticism after making a mistake in speaking

English language?

2. Do students have any confidence with their English?

3. Do students have any difficulties with their vocabularies?

4. Do students have any difficulties with their grammar?

5. How do students cope with their lack of competency?


Significance of the study

This study is significant for the following

Student. The findings of the study to help students to develop their confidence

and have more understanding with their education. the students are more

manageable, being controllable with their motivations, stress, and confidence .

Teacher. The teacher will teach and guide their students to their fullest

potential even though the students are having difficulties with speaking in

English and lack of confidence.

Guardians/Parents. This study will help the students to improve their critical

thinking due to speaking in English which means in can also help to mature the

student to the height where they will now think like an adult.

Future Researchers. This study will be useful for researchers especially

constructing and speak in English, They will not have any problems in

participating in Oral Defence.


Definition of terms

1st year senior High school student in UC -METC, These are the students who

will be used to gain Information and data.

Competence it is the ability to do something successfully or efficiently together

with there Mentality through Emotional way to speak in English of Grade 11

students.

Review related literature

According to Tickoo, (1991)The need for identifying a language for

communication withthe other, whose language is not one‘s mother tongue, has all

the more becomehighly important. English language has been identified for this

purpose as it is thelanguage of business, used both in transacting the business of

everyday livingand in building social and personal relations. So ourcountry needs

English, primarily not for social survival but as an additional language. Such a

language serves one‘s cognitive needs and in the retrieval and generation of

knowledge.“We need it as a language of learning a language that can satisfy many

cognitive needs"

Aneta Pavlenko, (2009) A discursive analysis of the students' positioning in

their linguistic autobiographies suggests that the traditional discourse of linguistic

competence positions students as members of one of two communities, native

speakers or non-native.
Garrett P. W., Dickson H G., Lis-Young , Whelan A. K. & Roberto-Forero

(2009) Because of the specific nature of each patient–provider interaction within

its particular social and political environment, culturally competent behaviour in

one context may be culturally incompetent in another.

Asian ESP Journal, Volume 14, Issue 7.2, (2018) Students who are not

English majors showed that there is a significant change of confidence level in

writing. It recommends that the software is continuously utilized. It is also

recommended that the software should improve its detection to avoid misleading

feedback for users.

KamonpanBoonkit (2010) The findings indicated that confidence, creativity

of topics, and speaking competence were the key aspects of improvement when

speaking to the audience.


CHAPTER 3

REASERCH METHODOLOGY

This research procedure processes and appropriate treatment that is used in the

study, the plan of this research or procedure will be presented by the researchers

of this research. The researchers will be following the flow of the research.

Research Design

This study utilized the methods in obtaining the data necessary for the

analysis and interpretation of the study. The researchers used lived experiences

and feed buels in gathering data the study is full of theories the researcher will be

aiming for the truth and opinions of the individuals that was inter viewed by the

researchers.

The study is conduced in a school UC-METC alumnus mambaling Cebu city.

This study is focused of grade 11 students in the campos December 12-january

3,2020 will be consuming


Reasrch Environment

This study is conducted at the University of Cebu - Maritime Education and

Training Center, Alumnos, Mambaling, Cebu City. This inspires the researcher due

the relationship that the students of University of cebu has established.

Research Respondents

There will be researchers interviewing 10 grade 11 senior high school

students to gain the expected results. The students will be any gender , The

students are need to be have sharp knowledge but also have troubles with speaking

in English

The interviewed students will be named as student( given letter) for example

student F However they will be remain anonymous.

Research Instrument

There will be researchers working together on interviewing the students. It will

be held in UC-METC and The researchers will ask each students will be given 4

questions relative to the study. The question will be (1) do you have any

confidence with speaking in English? (2) Do you have any difficulties in speaking

in English? If they say yes then he/she will be given the question (a.3) Is speaking
in English made you improve? If not he/she will be given another question (b.3)

why is it difficult for you and is it letting you down?
