Do I Need A Visa?

A visa is a certificate (sometimes referred to as ‘Entry Clearance’) which gives you permission to enter the UK.
The visa is put into your passport or travel document by an Entry Clearance Officer at a British mission overseas.

Check your category Non-EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals

You are a visa national:

6 months (or more), you must obtain a Tier 4 General student visa before
is on travelling to the UK.

the list If your course of studies is less than 6 months, you can apply to enter the
UK as a student visitor. You must obtain this visa before you leave your
home country.

You are a non-visa national:

6 months (or more), you must obtain a Tier 4 General student visa before
is not on travelling to the UK.

the list If your course of studies is less than 6 months, you can apply for entry to
the UK as a student visitor either prior to leaving your home country, or
on arrival at UK immigration at the port of entry.

2
Which Visa Should I Apply For?

If your intention is to travel to the UK as a student, there are two visa routes available. The route you are
eligible to use is determined by the length of the course you are travelling to study:

Visiting Undergraduate / Study Abroad Students

If you are travelling to Edinburgh to undertake short-term exchange studies of less than 6 months,
you may wish to consider doing so under the ‘student visitor’ category.

Should you wish to have the opportunity to work part-time during your studies or extend your
time at Edinburgh for more studies - which is not permissible under the student visitor category
- you should make an application for the Tier 4 General student visa. To do so, you will need to
contact your visiting undergraduate office at Edinburgh so that we can issue you with the required
documentation for a Tier 4 General student visa application.

Please also refer to the section ‘Travel outside of the UK as a student visitor’ (Page 4).

how to apply for a dependant’s visa, including
the application process, required documents and

Similar to the Tier 4 Guidance, the PBS Dependant’s

General points
• Dependants considered under UK immigration
rules are: married partners, civil partners, same-

marriage (for at least 2 years) and children under the
age of 18. Details on the documents required can be
found in the PBS Dependants’ Guidance.

• If your course of studies in the UK is for at least

you. If your course of studies is less than 6 months,
your family will not be able to join you as student
dependants.

• Dependants of degree-level students studying on

permitted to work in the UK however, you cannot rely
on potential earnings from such work as evidence for

What do I do if my visa is refused?

Firstly, if your visa is refused you should read the
refusal notice carefully. This will set out why the Entry
Clearance Officer has refused your application.

Secondly, you should refer to the documents you

sent in with the application and cross-check whether
these comply with the Tier 4 Guidance. This includes
checking that they are in the required format, cover
the required amount of time, are original and genuine
documents and are set out with the information as
required in the Guidance.

If you are refused outside of the UK, you will normally

have a right to an administrative review. This means
that you would return the documents as directed in
your refusal notice and an Entry Clearance Manager
from a different embassy to the one you applied to,
will reconsider your application. In such a case, they
may overturn, uphold or vary the grounds of the
refusal as appropriate. You should only follow this
