STANDARD PRACTICES MANUAL (PN 585005)

STANDARD OVERHAUL PROCEDURES − SPOP−415

Task 70−00−00−350−002:

1. SPOP 415 − Installation Of Helical Coil Threaded Inserts

A. General

CAUTION: THE USE OF HELICAL COIL THREADED INSERTS IN

THROUGH HOLES CAN CAUSE A LEAK PATH. THE USE
OF AN APPLICABLE SEALANT (REFER TO SECTION
70−48−00) AT THE BOLT HEAD INTERFACE ( FIGURE
3) IS RECOMMENDED.

(1) Use this SPOP to replace helical coil threaded inserts

(tanged or Tangless (R)) or to repair damage to threads
unless specified differently.

NOTE: Tangless (R) is a registered trademark of

ADVANEX, Inc. for helical coil threaded inserts
that do not have tangs.

(2) Helical coil threaded inserts are used in initial

part manufacture, which is typical for parts made of
aluminum or magnesium, and to repair damage to threads.
See Figure 1.

(3) Double helical coil threaded inserts are available for

threads that have damage more than the limits of
standard helical coil threaded insert specifications.
See Figure 2.

(4) Helical coil threaded inserts are available in all

standard sizes in National Fine and National Coarse
Series up to 1−1/2 inch (38.1 mm) size, as well as
8 pitch threads, metric threads, and tapered pipe
threads.

(5) Over−sized helical coil threaded inserts can be used if

the minimum wall thickness is kept.

(6) Tangless inserts have advantages when compared to

tanged inserts.

(a) Tangless inserts do not have tangs to remove and

discard, and this helps prevent possible Foreign
Object Damage (FOD).

(b) Tangless inserts can decrease the time necessary

for installation of threaded inserts.

(1) Available Sources

NOTE: Other sources are permitted.

(a) Refer to Tool And Equipment Sources, 70−91−00,

General−02 (Task 70−91−00−990−002) for the source
names identified by these codes:

0YC40
01556

(2) The above sources make available these items:

(a) Standard tools to use for helical coil removal and

installation

(b) Operation instructions and procedures for the

above tools

(c) Installation instructions that give part numbers

for the applicable helical coil threaded inserts.

C. Procedure

(1) To replace helical coil threaded inserts that were

installed during the initial manufacture of the part,
do the subsequent steps:

(a) Remove the helical coil threaded insert. Refer to

the manufacturer's instructions.

(b) To find the correct size of the new insert,

compare the new insert specifications with the
initial finished thread hole size. Use the
manufacturer's installation instructions as an aid
in the correct insert selection.

NOTE: For applications up to 800°F (427°C), use

stainless steel (AMS 7245) inserts.

NOTE: For applications 800° − 1000°F (427° −

538°C), use INCONEL X−750 (AMS 7246)
inserts.

(c) Apply a protective coat to the insert hole and

other areas where it is possible that the coat was
removed. Do the applicable procedure:

1 For aluminum, use SPOP 42. Refer to

Anodize Touch−up, 70−44−01, SPOP−42 (Task
70−44−01−330−012).

2 For magnesium alloys, use SPOP 41. Refer to

Chromate Conversion Treatment, 70−44−01,
SPOP−41 (Task 70−44−01−330−011).

(d) Install the new helical coil threaded insert 0.75

− 1.5 pitch below the top surface. Refer to the
manufacturer's instructions.

(e) Break off the installation tang at the notch.

NOTE: If a Tangless insert is used, this step is

not applicable.

(f) Collect and remove all broken tangs so that there

are none remaining with the part.

(2) To replace helical coil threaded inserts that were

installed to repair damage to threads, do the
subsequent steps:

(a) To find the correct size of the new insert,

compare the new insert specifications with the
initial finished thread hole size. Use the
manufacturer's installation instructions as an aid
in the correct insert selection.

NOTE: For applications up to 800°F (427°C), use

stainless steel (AMS 7245) inserts.

NOTE: For applications 800° − 1000°F (427° −

538°C), use INCONEL X−750 (AMS 7246)
inserts.

(b) Make sure there is sufficient wall thickness. See

Figure 4.

(c) A sufficient wall thickness is necessary for the

repair of damage to thread holes with helical coil
inserts.

(d) Drill and tap hole to the correct size. Refer to

the manufacturer's instructions.

(e) Treat the insert hole and other areas where it is

possible that the protective coating was removed.
Do the applicable procedure:

1 For aluminum, use SPOP 42. Refer to

Anodize Touch−up, 70−44−01, SPOP−42 (Task
70−44−01−330−012).

Chromate Conversion Treatment, 70−44−01,
SPOP−41 (Task 70−44−01−330−011).

(f) Install the new helical coil threaded insert 0.75

− 1.5 pitch below the top surface. Refer to the
manufacturer's instructions.

(g) Break off the installation tang at the notch.

NOTE: If a Tangless insert is used, this step is

not applicable.

(h) Collect and remove all broken tangs so that there

are none remaining with the part.

(3) When it is necessary to use a double helical coil

threaded insert to repair threads that have damage more
than the limits of standard helical coil threaded
insert specifications, do the subsequent steps:

(a) To find the correct size of the new insert,

compare the new insert specifications with the
initial finished thread hole size. Use the
manufacturer's installation instructions as an aid
in the correct insert selection.

NOTE: For applications up to 800°F (427°C), use
