EXECUTIVE TEAM

Healthcare is a serious and complex business, offering numerous challenges and plenty of
opportunities. No health system, no matter how committed, can tackle all the challenges at the
same time. But we do have to figure out a way to manage them. I believe the way to do this will
be through the power of communication. We must improve communication between patients and
their care givers. We must focus on providing patient-centered care, which means we must
collectively talk with patients and their healthcare providers to understand and respond to their
needs. We must be sure we focus on the whole patient too, taking into account the patient’s
physical, mental and emotional health. Putting the patient at the center of all we do and
supporting them with comprehensive communication between providers will allow us to create a
better care delivery model and better outcomes.

Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy

BSc, MBBS, DCH, AB, FAAP, CHCQM, MMM, CPE, FACPE

Chief Executive Officer

7
Along with communication, we need to practice evidence-based medicine. Practicing
evidence-based medicine means we must systematically approach healthcare problem solving by
integrating the best available research evidence with our clinical expertise and the patient’s
values in terms of employing interventions most likely to improve how long or how well the
patient lives—on his or her terms.

Improving clinical outcomes is our key to moving toward healthcare excellence. Our
future lies in developing a system where hospitals, physicians and patients truly partner for better
outcomes; where all stakeholders communicate proactively and consistently; where we remove
redundant processes to add value; where we take timely action on behalf of our patients with
their collaboration and support; where we foster a community where partnership in health is a
way of life.

The issues in healthcare and the strategies we execute now will determine the future of
our hospital, our communities and our nation. We must move from a focus on acute care to the
promotion of health. We must create a continuum of care that takes into account the total needs
of the population we serve. We must deploy a holistic approach that brings together acute and

8
chronic care, clinical and non-clinical care, prevention and overall physical and psychological
wellness.

We have done much and learned even more. But, we’ve only just begun.Join me as we
work together in achieving clinical and service excellence for the patients and their families who
rely on us.

Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to the total care of the patient
before, during and after surgery. Anaesthesiologists are also experts in resuscitation, pain
management and intensive care.

Cardiology

Cardiology is the study and treatment of disorders of the heart and the blood
vessels. A person with heart disease or cardiovascular disease may be referred to a cardiologist.

A cardiologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular

system. The cardiologist will carry out tests, and they may some do procedures, such as heart
catheterizations, angioplasty, or inserting a pacemaker.

10
When would I need a cardiologist?

Cardiology deals with heart health. If a person has symptoms of a heart condition, their
physician may refer them to a cardiologist.

Symptoms that can indicate a heart problem include:

 shortness of breath
 dizziness
 chest pains
 changes in heart rate or rhythm
 high blood pressure

They often treat patients who have had a heart attack, heart failure, or other heart problems.
They help make decisions about heart surgery, heart catheterization, and angioplasty and
stenting.

Heart diseases that a cardiologist can help with include:

 atherosclerosis
 artrial fibrillation
 arrhythmias
 congenital heart disease
 coronary heart disease
 congestive heart disease
 high blood cholesterol and triglycerides
 hypertension
 pericarditis
 ventricular tachycardia
 high blood pressure, or hypertension

11
A person may need to see a cardiologist even without symptoms, if they have a family
history of heart disease or high cholesterol, if they are or have been a smoker, if they have
diabetes, or if they are starting a new exercise program. A woman who has had pre-eclampsia
may be at higher risk of heart problems in a later pregnancy or during the menopause.

What does cardiology involve?

A cardiologist will review a patient's medical history and carry out a physical
examination.

They may check the person's weight, heart, lungs, blood pressure, and blood vessels, and
carry out some tests.

An interventional cardiologist may carry out procedures such as angioplasties, stenting,

valvuloplasties, congenital heart defect corrections, and coronary thrombectomies.

Tests

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG): this records the electrical activity of the heart.
Ambulatory ECG: this records heart rhythms while the person carries out exercise or their
regular activities. Small metal electrodes are stuck on to the chest, and these are connected by
wires to a Holter monitor, which records the rhythms. An exercise test, or stress test: this shows
the changes of heart rhythm when resting and exercising. It measures the performance and
limitations of the heart. Echocardiogram: this provides an ultrasound picture that shows the
structure of the heart chambers and surrounding areas, and it can show how well the heart is
working. Echocardiography can measure how well the heart is pumping blood, known as cardiac
output. It can detect inflammation around the heart, known as pericarditis. It can also identify
structural abnormalities or infections of the heart valves.

Cardiac catheterization: a small tube in or near the heart collects data and may help
relieve a blockage. It can take pictures and check the functioning of the heart and the electrical
system. Catheter-based techniques with fluoroscopy can be used to treat congenital cardiac,
valvular, and coronary artery diseases.

12
Nuclear cardiology: nuclear imaging techniques use radioactive materials to study
cardiovascular disorders and diseases in a noninvasive way.

Examples are infarction imaging, single-photon-emission computed tomography

(SPECT), planar imaging, and myocardial perfusion imaging.

Cardiac electrophysiology

Cardiac electrophysiology is a subspecialty of cardiology. The physician looks at how

electric currents inside the heart muscle tissue work, how the current spreads, and what the
pattern of the currents mean. Electrophysiology study (EPS) of the heart: in this test, a catheter is
threaded into a vein at the top of the leg. Guided under fluoroscopy, it makes its way to the heart.
The catheter measures the electrical signals within the heart.

An EPS of the heart can:

 help to show what is causing symptoms

 help decide if a patient needs a pacemaker
 help decide the best treatment for patients with arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm
 determine how likely a patient is to experience tachycardia or an accelerated heart beat
 A cardiac electrophysiologist can provide treatment for abnormal rhythms including
cardiac ablation, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, or pacemakers.

Dentistry

Dentistry, also known as dental medicine and 'oral medicine, is a branch of medicine that
consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions
of the oral cavity, commonly in the dentition but also the oral mucosa, and of adjacent and
related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area. Although
primarily associated with teeth among the general public, the field of dentistry or dental
medicine is not limited to teeth but includes other aspects of the craniofacial complex including
the temporomandibular joint and other supporting, muscular, lymphatic, nervous, vascular, and
anatomical structures.

13
Dermatology

Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin. It is a specialty with both
medical and surgical aspects. A dermatologist is specialist doctor that manages diseases, in the
widest sense, and some cosmetic problems of the skin.

 ENT
 Emergency Medicine

 Diabetology

Gaestroentrology

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its
disorders. Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which include the organs from mouth into
anus, along the alimentary canal, are the focus of this speciality. Physicians practicing in this
field are called gastroenterologists. They have usually completed about eight years of pre-
medical and medical education, a year-long internship (if this is not a part of the residency), three
years of an internal medicine residency, and two to three years in the gastroenterology
fellowship. Gastroenterologists perform a number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
including colonoscopy, endoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP),
endoscopic ultrasound and liver biopsy. Some gastroenterology trainees will complete a "fourth-
year" (although this is often their seventh year of graduate medical education) in transplant
hepatology, advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, motility or other topics.

Orthopedics

Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics, also spelled orthopaedics, is the branch of surgery

concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both
surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries,
degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

14
Pulmonology

Pulmonology is known as chest medicine and respiratory medicine in some countries and
areas. Pulmonology is considered a branch of internal medicine, and is related to intensive care
medicine. Pulmonology often involves managing patients who need life support and mechanical
ventilation. Pulmonologists are specially trained in diseases and conditions of the chest,
particularly pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, and complicated chest infections.

Nephrology

Nephrology studies systemic conditions that affect the kidneys, such as diabetes and
autoimmune disease; and systemic diseases that occur as a result of kidney disease, such as renal
osteodystrophy and hypertension. A physician who has undertaken additional training and
become certified in nephrology is called a nephrologist.

Gynocology

Gynocology is the medical practice dealing with the health of the female reproductive
system (vagina, uterus, and ovaries) and the breasts. Outside medicine, the term means "the
science of women". Its counterpart is andrology, which deals with medical issues specific to the
male reproductive system.

Oncology

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
of cancer. A medical professional who practices oncology is an oncologist Cancer survival has
improved due to three main components: improved prevention efforts to reduce exposure to risk
factors (e.g., tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption), improved screening of several cancers
(allowing for earlier diagnosis), and improvements in treatment. Cancers are often managed
through discussion on multi-disciplinary cancer conferences where medical oncologists, surgical
oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and organ specific oncologists meet
to find the best possible management for an individual patient considering the physical, social,
psychological, emotional, and financial status of the patient. It is very important for oncologists
to keep updated with respect to the latest advancements in oncology, as changes in management
of cancer are quite common.

15
Opthalmology

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery which deals with the diagnosis and
treatment of eye disorders. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in ophthalmology. The credentials
include a degree in medicine, followed by additional four to five years of ophthalmology
residency training. Ophthalmology residency training programs may require a one-year pre-
residency training in internal medicine, pediatrics, or general surgery. Additional specialty
training (or fellowship) may be sought in a particular aspect of eye pathology. Ophthalmologists
are allowed to use medications to treat eye diseases, implement laser therapy, and perform
surgery when needed. Ophthalmologists may participate in academic research on the diagnosis
and treatment for eye disorders.

The population suffering from chronic diseases is on the rise in the developing countries
as also their medical expenses. Chronic diseases are progressive long-term medical conditions
like heart diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, stroke, chronic renal failure, cancer etc. These
diseases limit the capacity of the patient to perform everyday tasks like personal grooming,
mobility and household chores; and they increasingly need assistance. They are major drivers for
seeking repeated consultations and consequent hospitalization.

Studies have shown that an in-home care delivered by trained nurses guided by
physicians has a beneficial effect on health outcomes such as reduced morbidity (disease
burden), unplanned hospitalizations and emergency department visits.

We know that environment plays a significant role in the recovery process. Patients
recover faster when they are comfortable and feel positive, hence we assist patients to travel
around to various tourist locations in and around Coimbatore – the Queen of Hills - Ooty,
Kodaikanal, Conoor, Attapadi, Anakatti, Valparai, Kotagiri, Topslip, Munnar, Silent Valley and
many more – to get a feel of our tradition and heritage – places like Mysore, Thanjavur etc....
depending on the patient's inclination.
