AP Physics 1 Conservation of Energy Bertossa

1. A pencil (approximate as a thin rod) 18 cm long stands vertically on its point end on a
horizontal table. If it falls over without slipping, with what tangential speed does the eraser
end strike the table?

2. A hoop starts from rest at a height 1.2 m above the base of an inclined plane and rolls down
under the influence of gravity. What is the linear speed of the hoop’s center of mass just as
the hoop leaves the incline and rolls onto a horizontal surface?

3. A cylindrical hoop, a cylinder, and a sphere of equal radius and mass are released at the
same time from the top of an inclined plane. Using conservation of mechanical energy,
show that the sphere always gets to the bottom of the incline first with the fastest speed and
that the hoop always arrives last with the slowest speed.

4. A sphere with a radius of 15 cm rolls on a level surface with a constant angular speed of 8.0
rad/s. To what height on a 30° inclined plane will the sphere roll before coming to rest?
(Neglect frictional losses.)

5. A 1.5 kg bicycle tire of radius 0.33 m starts from rest and rolls without slipping from the
top of an incline that is 14.8 m high. (Assume that the tire is a hoop, I = mr2.)

a. What is the translational speed of the center of mass of the tire when it reaches the
bottom of the incline?

b. Find the speed of the tire if it reaches the bottom of the incline by slipping
frictionlessly without rolling.

6. A 65.0 kg cylindrical barrel rests at the top of a hill. Suppose the barrel is released and rolls
down the hill. If the linear speed of the barrel at the bottom of the slope is 12.0 m/s, how
high is the hill? Assume the barrel’s moment of inertia is to 0.80 MR2.

7. A uniform solid disk of radius 8.9 m and mass 19.1 kg is free to rotate
on a frictionless pivot through a point on its rim. If the disk is released
from rest in the position shown by the solid circle, what is the speed of
its center of mass when the disk reaches the position indicated by the
dashed circle? The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s2.
