1. What is HDPE?

-It means High Density Polyethylene.

-Mainly Thermoplastic Material which is made from Petroleum.
-It is sometimes called “alkathene”or “polyethane” when used for pipes.
With a high strength to density ratio, HDPE is used in the production of Plastic bottles,
corrosion-resistant piping.
-HDPE is commonly recycled, and has the number “2” as its resin identification code.

2. Features & Benefits, Standards for Pipes?

4. Properties (General,mechanical,thermal,electrical,flammability)

1. General Properties:-
HDPE is known for its large strength to density ratio.
The density of HDPE cans 0.93 to 0.97 g/cm3 or 970kg/m3.
HDPE has little branching, giving it stronger intermolecular forces & tensile strength.

Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion is one of the most costly problems associated with metal piping system.it
Occurs both inside and outside the pipe and affects hydraulic efficiency. Many cities treat
their water to help slow rust and pitting that is inevitable with metal pipes. Others choose
costly catholic protection, plastic coating, or sleeving to try and extend the service life of
the pipe.
Unlike traditional metal infrastructure product, HDPE pipe does not rust, corrode. It is a
Resistant to biological growth. This means an extended service life and long term cost
savings.

Fatigue Resistance
HDPE is flexible and ductile, not rigid.it has outstanding resistance to fatigue. Unlike other
plastic pipes, it is designed and pressure rated to handle the kind of occasional and
recurring surge events that are common in water distribution system.
In many instance, this will enable to utilize a thinner wall HDPE pipe as compared to other
type of plastic piping.

Extended Service Life

HDPE is safe and durable product ideal for your piping infrastructure. The service life of
HDPE pipe is estimated to be between 50 to 100 years, depending on application, design
and installation.

Look-Free Joints
An independent study reports that municipalities in 43 states average a water loss of 16%
due to leaking joints. Some reports water losses as high as 50%.
Traditional infrastructure piping is joined with bell and spigot or mechanical type joints and
all acknowledge a specified leakage factor. Not only is most precious resource being lost,
but leaking pipes are costing our cities money. HDPE piping system can be joined with heat
fusion to produce permanent leak free joints.

Eco-Friendly
In addition to its outstanding physical characteristics, HDPE is recognized for its minimal
impact on the environment.
It takes less energy to manufacture HDPE than non-plastic pipes.
HDPE is light weight and often more cost effective to transport than metal pipes.
The flexibility of HDPE, combined with the use of heat fusion join the pipe, means fewer
fittings are required.

2. Mechanical Properties
Low Strength, Hardness, Rigidity.
But has a high Ductility & Impact Strength as well as low Friction.
It shows strong creep under persistence force which can be reduced by addition of short
Fibres.

3. Flammability:-
Polyethylene burns slowly with a blue flame having a yellow tip & gives off an odour
paraffin (Similar to Candle Flame)

4. Electrical properties:-
Good electric insulator.
It offers good tracking resistance.

5. Chemical Properties:-
Excellent ChemicalResistance, meaning they are not attacked by strong acid or Strong
bases & are resistance to generate oxidant & reducing agent.
PE can become brittle when exposed to sunlight; carbon black Is usually used as UV
stabilizer.

5. Material Grades?

There are mainly three grades of this Material

A) PE100
B) PE80
C) PE63
6. What is the expected shelf life in normal case?
Many installation of HDPE pipe in water application are already reaching 50 years of successful
service.
The polyethylene pipe industry estimates a service life for HDPE pipe to conservatively be 50-
100 years but this will vary based on pipe service conditions.
This relates to savings in replacement costs for generation come.
