COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Name/Code: GE 5 – Purposive Communication


Course Credits: 3 Units
Course Description: This course practices writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for various purposes. The five skills of communication
are studied and stimulated in advanced academic settings, such as conversing intelligently on a subject to impart, reporting on group work
or assignments, writing and delivering a formal speech, writing minutes of meetings and similar documents, preparing a research or
technical paper, and making an audio-visual or web-based presentation. The purpose of these combined activities is “to enable students to
practice strategies of communication with a clear purpose and audience in mind, guided by the criteria of effective communication and the
appropriate language” (CHED, 2013). The course is both pragmatic and aspirational; it helps students in using English language skills to
gain and share knowledge and insights with different discourse communities in the Philippines as well as sing these skills to create and
critique knowledge for the good of Philippine society.

Course Objectives/Outcome: At the end of the semester, the students will be able to:

Knowledge
1. describe the nature, elements and functions of verbal and non-verbal communication in various and multi-cultural contexts;
2. explain how cultural and global issues affect communication;
3. determine culturally appropriate terms, expressions and images;
4. evaluate multimodal texts critically to enhance receptive skills; and
5. summarize the principles of academic text structure.

Skills
1. convey ideas through oral, audio-visual, and/ or web-based presentations for different target audiences in local and global settings
using appropriate registers;
2. create clear, coherent and effective communication materials;
3. present ideas persuasively using appropriate language registers, tone, facial expressions and gestures
4. write and present academic papers using appropriate tone, style, conventions and reference styles

Values
1. adopt cultural and intercultural awareness and sensitivity in communication of ideas;
2. appreciate the differences of the varieties of spoken and written language;
3. adopt awareness of audience and context in presenting ideas; and
4. appreciate the impact of communication on society and the world.

Utilization of Library and Internet Sources
Course Requirements  Research Reports/ Mini-Research – Make a summary report for the research on various cultural and intercultural modes of communication. Be able
to present essential details and facts from the manuscript/ findings by following the format expressed as briefly as possible. Your report will be
graded according to formality of the report (20%), content and relevance (30%), grammar (20%), organization (10%).

 Field Observations and Interview – The objective of this activity is to observe the development, changes and effects of language to culture and
society.
1. Observations will last for one to two days only depending on the activity.
2. Take note every single detail of your observation and interview
3. Also, write down the problems you have observed.
4. For evidences, make a timeline of the observation and write everything on your journal.

 Paper/ Literary Text Analysis – Follow instructions below.

2. You will be asked to analyze the text using a Literary Criticism you will choose (except Reader’s Response)

3. Write your language analysis on your notebook.
4. Analysis may or may not be recited. In this sense, you may be asked to pass you Analysis Paper.
 Reporting – Topics will be assigned. The reporter who will fail to perform the task will not be given chance anymore (unless condition requires). The
reporting will be graded according to content and mastery (20%), use of instructional materials (20%), and judicious use of time (10%).
 Presentation – Presentation promoting cultural values. You performance will be graded according to the strategies used (30%), practicality of the
activity (20%) and use of time (10%).
 Public Announcements – may be through audio/video, social media. Topics will tackle disaster preparedness
 Workplace documents – tasks shall be assigned during the discussion
 Multimodal Advocacy Campaign (addressing current issues in the society) – Your project will be graded according to content and relevance (30%),
creativity (10%), cleanliness and appropriateness (10%)

Classroom Policies The students are expected to follow the classroom rules as stated below;
 The Class must start with preliminaries with assigned prayer leaders every session.
 Deadlines are absolute. If you are absent the day an assignment is given, the due date will not be extended. Students are responsible for finding
out what they missed. However, unless notified, we will be following the class calendar that you receive with this syllabus. If in doubt, refer to
the class calendar if you are absent.
 Type and double-space all your assignments, unless told otherwise. Submit on time in order for them to be graded.
 Disconnect from phone when coming to class.
 Don’t plagiarize.
 Attendance is strictly checked. Students who miss the indicated number of absences will fail the course.
 Late comers are not permitted to get inside the classroom especially when it’s already 30-minute late.
 Students who will not be able to take the exam on the scheduled date must be able to take the exam within 5 days after the exam.
 The class must end with a closing prayer.
