ABSTRACT

There are basically two types of loads that we are concerned about here -
STATIC LOAD -
Static loads are loads which exert a constant amount of force . Eg.-weight of a
bridge span upon the bridge pilings holding it.
DYNAMIC LOAD-
Dynamic loads which exert varying amounts of force upon the structure that
would upholding them.Eg.-loads imposed by moving vehicles on the bridge ,
Earthquake , etc.
There can be certain consequences of these loads . Few of them are -
1) FOUNDATION failure - Due to sudden increase of load in a very small amount
of time can lead to cracks in the foundation of some structures , finally lding to
foundation failure .
2) STRUCTURE failure - If the foundation of thtructure is enough strong to
survive the load , then there may be a case of structural failure . In this case ,
the structure collapses resulting in a lot of damage to life , wealth and property.
INTRODUCTION

Soil contamination or commonly known as soil pollution is mainly caused by

presence of XENOBIOTIC ( human made ) chemicals or other alteration in
natural soil environment.
It is typically caused by industrial activities , agricultural chemicals , or
improper disposal of waste.
We can use variety of treatment technologies for processing contaminated soil
, such as thermal desorption , bioremediation , chemical fixation , and various
physical segregation treatments .

They can be used in the following ways -

1) as FOUNDATIONS - These soil samples can be tested in laboratories for

their strength and can be used as a foundation basis for some specific
type of structures.

2) as BACKFILLS - These soils can be retreated , pollutants removed and after

finely grading can be used as an alternative for backfills . Treatment costs may
be a little higher but the overall costs almost remains the same.

3) as EMBANKMENTS - A road , railway line or a canal is normally raised to an

embankment made of compacted soil to avoid change in level required by the
terrain . These contaminated soils can be treated and can be used to make
these embankments .

BY ABOVE MEANS AND SOME MORE , THE CONTAMINATED SOILS CAN BE

REUSED AGAIN , THUS SAVING PURE SOIL FOR OTHER IMPORTANT PURPOSES .

TEST METHODS:

Direct Shear Test

The general relationship between maximum shearing resistance, τ and normal
stress, σ,for soils can be represented by the equation known as coulombs law:
τ = C+ σ*tanφ
Where,
C= cohesion which is due to internal forces holding soil particle together in a
solid mass
Φ= Friction which is due to the interlocking of the particles and the friction
between them when subjected to a normal stress
H τ =Shearing resistance of soil at failure
, σ= Total normal stresses on failure plane
The friction components increase with increasing normal stress but the
cohesion components remains constant. If there is no normal stress the
friction disappears.

THINGS TO BE DONE FURTHER -

1)CONSOLIDATION of the soil samples one by one.

2) Being friendly with PLAXIS 2-D interface.
3) Values of cohesion and internal friction obtained to be inputed in the
software.
4)Calculation of plastic straining due to primary loading.
5)Calculation of plastic straining due to primary compression.
6)Elastic unloading / reloading.
