Asessment1
Excellence in Leadership
Part A

1. Why is it important to establish linkages between organisational objectives,

values and standards to the responsibilities of relevant groups and individuals
when setting goals in the organisation? (10 marks)

The importance of establish linkages between organizational objectives, values

and standards speaking about setting goals, is to show coherence in what the
organization says and what is done. It also means to engage all the people involved in
the organization, from the staffs to the owners in the way to make everyone feel how
important each one is the process, it will also keep the person motivated because they
will fell themselves as an important part of the process.
Once the co-workers understand what the company is aiming for and once they
notice that the values are taken serious, and how important they are in the process, it
will be easier to set and achieve the goals, once everyone it will be working in the same
direction. The same happens with managers, team leaders and team members.

2. What is the relationship between media and language used when

communicating organisational mission and goals to staff? Give an example.
(10 marks)

The language used in a certain media must be chosen according to the kind of
media and kind of the target people it intend to achieve.
Actually the media is becoming bigger every moment. If a leader would like to
communicate himself to his team, he must first be a good communicator and second,
he must have the knowledge of choosing the media that his team is more keen to
listening, some people can prefer to be contacted by phone calls but another can prefer
to receive a text message, a whatsApp message, social network, email, and others.
Also, a language used must be appropriated for his target market, for example,
and members can prefer a grammatically correct and old fashioned language, yang
ones may understand better colloquial speaking. In any case a clear and objective
speaking will be a better choice.

Example: To send information to the corporative managers and leaders about the new
acquisition of the company and how are the expectations of it, it will be a good option
send it by e-mail using a god and simple English. That will be easy to understand and
effective to delivery.

3. When there is a goal to achieve, explain the importance of stating expectations

clearly to staff in a language easy to understand to ensure commitment to the
given goal? (10 marks)

People will do a better job if they understand what they were required to do. As
told before, a leader must be a good communicator, must encourage the others and be
specific and clear about the goals and about the expectations of everyone involved in
the process and as a result, the team will feel involved as an important part of the
process.
If the leader doesn’t be able to make himself understood, or because he didn’t
use the appropriated language to his public or he didn’t be clear in his talking, it will be
difficult to the team work together, as a team.
Also, is important to keep himself open to listening what the team has to say
and use the feedbacks to build rapports and develop a better job.

4. When an incident occurs in the organisation (e.g., accident, scandal), explain

why it is important to communicate results clearly to relevant groups and
individuals involved?

First of all, explain what had happened clearly is important to prevent, mitigate
or reduce risks. An incident or scandal.
Once more, the kind of media and language chosen will interfere in the final
result. Once a problem occur, is always better to understand that a problem exist,
explain what and if possible why had happened, if some solution is in mind so also
explain how the case will be solved and if not, be open to receive any ideas.
Be opened shows ethic. In the corporative world, ethic means much about the
company. Its common to a company gain costumers or make big business with another
big companies especially because of this value: ethic.

5. Discuss the importance of

a. Leaders as role-models in the workplace

A leader must be an example in the work place. People are more keen to act follow an
example than just doing what the manager or leader say to be done. It happens the
same with children and their parents, they most copy the parents acts than listening to
them. In the corporative environment its the same. A leader must be respected and the
team must follow him because they are attracted sentimentally to do that, because they
are believed by what they do and what they are, so it’s important to the leader also
show a good listening and empathy. If a leader just say and act as the opposite it will
show incoherence and so for the team that won’t make sense.

b. Workplace culture

Creating a positive culture in the workplace it will be highly beneficial even if take
longer to be done. A workplace culture is also a workplace identity. Developing a
positive culture based on ethic and good values will keep the group engaged,
motivated and felling like part of something important. When an individual feels
identification with the workplace culture his productivity will be increased and better
results can be noticed.

c. Change management in the workplace

The intelligent way to run a business is making adaptations in any necessary

level according to the market scenario. Change management in the workplace means
survive for the crisis, means increase the business, means understand what is
happening outside of the office and making adaptations to offer to the target market
what they are up to consume from the company.
It’s primordial to a leader or manager to understand this necessity and conduce
the changes trough the role team in order to make them accept and work according to
the new implementations or similar.

d. Workplace consultation and communication

Consultations and communications are the basis to an effective good result in

the workplace.
The leader or manager must be a good communicator to the team, be a good
listener and apply the feedbacks when make value to the business. When some
doesn’t know or doesn’t understand or are feeling lost in the process, asking, looking
for the answers, making researches, making consultations to the ones that knows
properly or in the right sources, can be very helpful.
Communication can be consider the most important part of a good result. When
each one knows what should be done and what is expected to him to do, it will be quite
easy to act according.
Finally, good communication doesn’t require expenditure of money or time, it’s
just a practice that should be done every time and that will result in benefits such as
improve the company performance, and increase to job satisfaction.

e. Decision-making and risk management

In a corporative environment every decision-making means take risks. It’s not

possible to think in decision-making without think also about assuming risks. Daily or
frequently is there many decisions to be made and so, each of it must be well based on
knowelegmet, market news, good sources of information, discussions with the people
involves and any possible chances to minimize the risks of a wrong choice, this is a risk
management.
The ability on risk management helps the company in gain market, because a
good decision will show that it was made a good risk management and consequently
the people involved in that are taken as successful person, it shows positive and
confident and in result, it will be attractive to another companies make business with.

f. Public relations

Public relations permit the company to build a good business network. It helps
to boost the business to a higher level national and international as well. A good
network, a good public relation can open doors in the business world, can improve the
marketing and in consequence causes the expansion of the target market, increases
the credibility, builds reputation and tighten the bonds with the community.
Increase in public relations is a good point to bet. A great network is always a
good way to development of the business and also a possibility of support if necessary.
A team leader must to understand this importance and focusing in the public
relations. This will affects not only the company reputation but also the particular.
g. Business ethics

Ethics is the set of values that governing organizational life, this affects the
decision making, leadership style and helps in the creation of an organizational culture,
also, a company based on ethical principles tends to mitigate its risks.
In this scenario, it can be said that ethics applies when is given an equal
treatment of those who are equals in the measure of its similarity, so, each case should
be evaluated in such a way that the same rules are applied without distinction and bias
for reasons that are not obvious.
A company that governs itself under the ethical prism by itself already
denotes greater credibility, consequently gain positive points in the market and holds
greater ease of building good public relations and good networks.

h. Leadership styles

Autocratic, Supportive, Participative, Achievement-Oriented, Transformational:

those are some leadership styles. It means the way that you act and conduce your
leadership and it can say a lot about you. Also, depending of what kind of business you
are, some of this styles can be helpful and others can be a disaster.
If the leader is Autocratic, it means that the leader make his own decisions and
he is very clear and objective in give the team directions.
A Supportive leader use to be more attemptive to employee necessities, use to
show respect and be respected for them, the team use to feel with value to the
company.
A Participative is that one who is directly involved with the employees, he asks
directly the questions or for feedback and shows he is engaged with the team. The
team knows that his feedback will be heard.
An Achievement-Oriented goes for the achievement of the goals. He encourage
the team to improvement and autonomy because he believes that the team can gain
better results. He shows confidence in the team ability to do a good job.
Finally, the Transformational is that one who shows his believes in the future,
use to inspire the team and catch their heart making them believe in his vision of future.
The leadership style depends first of the personal style of the person who is te
leader, but it also can be improved considering the scenario, the kind of business, the
target market, the company culture, the individual culture of the team. If all this
variables are considered so the best leadership style will support the team and making
better results for the company.
i. Professional development

To retain an employee, investing in him to be developed, giving him the chance

of participate on courses, trainings, investing in him giving him the opportunity to feel
himself productive, important to the company and trusting in him in his own decision
taking, it will cost less than training a new one to start again the process over the
beginning.
Self development, professional development shows that the individual is
important, that the company believes on him, and as a result he increases his
motivation, shows better results and act like really engaged to the company objectives.
