 Introduction

The purpose of this unit is to express ideas and information effectively by studying the past

simple, modal verbs, compound adjectives, among others.

The objective is that each student understands the simple past and has a broader explanation

about this grammar time, which allows to have a better knowledge on this subject thanks to

contextualization, interactive exercises and evaluation.

 Activities to develop

Part 1: After checking the Unit 1 Topic 2: Modal Verbs, write 1 sentence using each one of the

modal verbs regarding your duties and rights as UNAD student: can – could – may - must - should

- ought to – have to – need to- had better - would.

Example:

• I must follow the netiquette rules to participate in the forum.

• I can’t present the English quiz three times because there are only two attempts.

Developing:

➢ I should support and defend the student regulations

➢ I ought to participate in the democratic process of the university

➢ I need to pay the tuition to study

➢ I may be a monitor in my university

➢ I can renew my student card before it expires.

➢ I could be part of research groups

➢ I must do what the student regulations say

➢ I have to do the homework of the enrolled courses.

➢ I had better not to pay the work of my colleagues

➢ I would prefer to study before doing the evaluation.

Part 2: According to the topic Past Progressive (Unit 1: Topic 3), each student must write 5 things

you were doing recently and 5 things you were not:

Example: I was reading the new book by Stephen King.

I was not listening to my favorite music.

Developing:

1. I was eating vanilla cookies

2. I was listening to music while doing a math assessment

3. I was singing my favorite song

4. I was thinking in my husband

5. I was reading about aliens

1. I was not playing videogames

2. I was not watching tv

3. I was not working on my degree project

4. I was not reading my favorite comic

5. I was not sleeping today at 10:00 pm

Part 3: Write a text about how you imagine yourself in ten years. Use at least two pictures related

to your text. You should write four paragraphs:

Example: I will work in a multimedia company in New York.

➢ Paragraph 1: Introduce yourself.

➢ Paragraph 2: Your working life.

➢ Paragraph 3: Your loved life.

➢ Paragraph 4: Your sporting life.

Each paragraph must have minimum four (4) sentences and maximum six (6) sentences. It must

have a title, from 230 words to 250 and it is necessary to use and highlight the following topics:

➢ Modal verbs

➢ Future

➢ Phrasal verbs

Developing:

My personal presentation

My name is Dania Carolina Gonzalez, I am 21 years old, my marital status is single, I live with

my parents in a small farm that grows coffee that is located in the municipality of Palermo huila,

on the farm there are cows, ducks, chickens and my pets , two dogs and a cat.

Eventually I work with the arts, painting landscapes and portraits on canvases and vases, I also

work in a telecommunications company, called "tecmedia solutions para el campo" and provide

technical support.
I put off my studies for some time but currently I am in the ninth semester of electronic

engineering and I am very happy to start my professional life soon.

My hobby is reading, listening to music and taking care of my pets.

My Laboral life

I am 21 years old, therefore, I have not had the opportunity to work in many companies, last year

I worked as a supervisor in the surveys conducted by DANE and SISBEN.

Currently I work with my family in a telecommunications company under the orders of my boss

providing the technical support service, so I must travel every day to different paths and

municipalities to maintain the network of each client.

I also work on commission making portraits and drawings, which generates extra economic

gains.
My beloved life

My beloved life would be having a stable job in the area of telecommunications and networks,

but first I should finish my university career.

I would buy an apartment in the city of Neiva, I would leave the country, and I long to know

countries like Canada, Japan, I might like their culture and I would also travel through some

Latin American countries, but I should first travel throughout Colombia and know about the

customs and traditions of each department, maybe I like some and lived there

I would also like to marry my partner, and together with him to make our own computer solutions

company, and maybe later we could have children.

My sporting life

Dance is also a sport and I have dedicated a large part of my life to it, I have been in folk dance

groups, and it takes a lot of physical effort not to give up, rehearses for hours, jump on, often

Fall down and fall over but getting up again to stay by next to my dance group.

I look forward to able to dance on big stages to go from go about, with the traditions of huila.
 Conclusions

• It was possible to identify modal verbs and their application correctly in different

sentences and contexts.

• The pogressive past was used to make ten sentences, five of them negative.

• Four paragraphs were made on personal presentation, loved life, and ideal work where the

knowledge acquired throughout the development of the guide was used.
