The separator of the future

• Our focus is on:

• Robustness
• Separation efficiency
• Energy-efficiency
• Smart separation

The separator of the future...
Is more effective
For a given machine size this means:
• Higher separation efficiency
• Higher throughput capacity (lph)

For a given duty this means:

• Smaller, more compact machines

But …after more than 100 years… is there still room for improvement?

The separator of the future...
Is more effective

“Isn’t it simple… More discs in bowl = more separation power?”

Yes and no… Bowl

The separator of the future...
Is more effective
Hence:
• There is an optimum disc spacing, related to viscosity
• Reducing the spacing below this optimum will reduce performance
• Furthermore, reducing the spacing leads to - risk for clogging
- more difficult to clean
- heavier, more expensive disc stack

So… how can separation performance be increased?

The separator of the future...
Is more effective
There are plenty of factors that allow for performance increase!
• Liquid-liquid interface management
• Sludge and water evacuation management
• Optimized flow patterns: - in the distribution zone
- at the edge of the disc stack
• Optimize bowl internals to allow max Disc area (angle, diameters)
• Increase of G-force
• Maintaining consisten spacing between the discs
• Shape and number of caulks, slots, …
• Distributor design
• X-factors …

The separator of the future...
Is more effective
Example: Separator Efficiency Upgrade “Apollo Luna”
• Redesigned disc stack, distributor and top disc
• Performance increase up to 30% (CFR)
• Development based on: - Idea
- CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
- Lab verification

The separator of the future...
Is more effective
Example: Separator Efficiency Upgrade “Apollo Luna”
• Brim disc to counter the re-introduction of separated particles
• Result: more efficient separation

= particles

= oil

The separator of the future...
Is more energy-efficient
For a given capacity this means:

• Lower carbon footprint

• Lower installation and operating cost

The separator of the future...
Is more energy-efficient
Energy savings…
• Reduce electrical losses (motor)
• Reduce mechanical losses (ex. bearings)
• Reduce friction between liquid and bowl parts
• Reduce friction between rotating bowl and air
• Reduce energy level of outcoming liquid
(pressure, velocity)

The separator of the future...
Is more energy-efficient
Example: Alfa Laval ‘C2C’ centre-to-centre philosophy
• Liquid outlets as close to the centre as possible
• Reduction of energy level of outcoming liquid
• Significant energy savings!
