NHD Process Paper

The topic I chose for my NHD project is “The developing World Wide Web.” When we got the
theme for NHD ``Breaking Barriers” I immediately thought of a topic that pertained to science,
engineering, and technology. The two other topics I had picked out were the Apollo 11 Mission
and John Glenn's Friendship 7 Mission. After brainstorming and thinking of other topics I went
with The developing world wide web because I have always been fascinated by how it was made
and what its purpose was. This topic specifically is interesting because the world wide web was
only invented about 30 years ago and in that short amount of time developers were able to
advance technology to the next level with high speed internet, buying and selling goods from
countries on the other side of the world, conducting business with forgien countries, and having
access to be able to travel to these places using the World Wide Web. I chose this topic because I
knew I wanted to research a barrier that was broken by technology, science, and engineering.
This topic fits perfectly with what I wanted to research.
For this topic, I began my research by finding out who the inventor of the world wide web was,
and taking off from there the thorough research began. After finding out who the inventor was I
did some research on him, Sir Tim Barners-Lee. Once I did research on him I began to research
the timeline and history of the world wide web and the process it took to create it and make it
open for use to the public. I mainly used Encyclopedia Britannica and Google to begin my
research. Some research questions that I created to help guide my research is “ What was the
main purpose of the world wide web? What impact did the World Wide Web have on business?”
After compiling all the different sources together I looked through them again to determine
whether it was useful to the research for this project or not. Once I did that I divided the sources
to primary and secondary sources. This helped me to figure out what sources would be the best
to use and which would be a good source for extra facts or context. My topic has evolved after
doing more and more research. It has done so because now my topic is more detailed and I am
now able to put more thought into how I want to expand upon the topic during this project.
Throughout the process the information I need to continue with my research has stayed the same
but new information is added by needing to know the reasons for the world wide web to come
into existence.
For this project I chose to use a website for my presentation category. At first I was going to do
an exhibit but after taking in all the categories for consideration I chose the website category.
This category is fitting for my topic on the developing World Wide Web because a website is
perfect for a topic on technology and it is an easy way to fit all the information needed to explain
the topic. To create the website I first chose a weebly website creator to create my website. After
picking weebly I started to create my website. First I divided all the information into four pages.
Next I began to format each page to have areas to insert images and have a subtitle for certain
topics within the main four pages. After formatting the pages I began to add information to each
page describing what happened, short and long term impacts, and how it broke barriers. Once all
the information is put into the pages I went back to check for any spelling or grammatical errors.
After that is done I created a domain name for the website as well as a QR code to have easy
access to the website. Finally I published the website in its final form.
The theme for this year's National History Day is “Breaking Barriers.” This topic not only
breaks barriers in technology but in business as well. It breaks barriers in technology just jump
starting a whole new ring of possibilities for companies to thrive and expand using the world
wide web. It also broke barriers in business by expanding companies buyers and sellers to
different countries around the world. Businessmen are able to conduct business with companies
on the other side of the world. Overall I would say that my topic does fit right into the theme for
this year's National History Day.
