1 Validity
These guidelines serve exclusively to regulate the procedure of archiving paperless tools
documentation created in 2D CAD. These guidelines are intended to complement existing BMW
guidelines, and present them in simpler terms, but they shall not invalidate them. The design
efforts to be contributed by suppliers and BMW specialist departments can vary slightly from
case to case. Additional arrangements and agreements are binding.
The basic principle to prefer 3D documentations, in particular Catia, keeps its validity (see goals
of DMU project).

Note: This document describes a German AUTOCAD installation. English AUTOCAD

installations have analogous screens and options.

3 Guidelines for AUTOCAD 2D Drawings

This section describes in greater detail how to create 2D-drawings.

3.1 Agreed Principles

• External references are generally NOT allowed!

• 3D-drawings are generally NOT allowed!
• Blocks are NOT allowed, excepting BMW blocks
• Draw in the model area only!
• The LIMITES (sheet borders) have to be aligned to the frame!
• Do not draw in the blocked area of the title block, and not beyond the A3 format height or
outside the drawing frame!
• Use the ISOCP.SHX font!
• Each drawing must be stored in a separate file. File names are obtained from the BMW
naming convention. Data must NOT be write-protected!
• Downloaded files (especially templates) provided by the BMW Group must NOT be edited!
• The width of the poly-line must NOT be changed! Draw wide lines using a rectangle hatched
with the “SOLID” hatching pattern.
• When using the “BenutzerKoordinatenSystem” (UserCoordinateSystem), switch back to
“WeltKoordinatenSystem” (WorldCoordinateSystem) before supplying the drawing!
• Dimensioning: ALL dimensioning settings, e.g. vector sizes, text colors, etc. are set by the
drawing template and must not be changed!
• Drawings in the DWG format are to be stored in full functional AutoCad version up to 2004
Mechanical Power Pack.
• Drawings plotted in the HPGL format, need to be created with the presettings and must
reproduce the model exactly. When a model is edited, a new plot file needs to be created as
well!
• Drawing standard is ISO!
• Setting: metrical!

4 Filling in the Title Blocks

The title blocks must be filled in completely and correctly. The supplier’s title block may appear
also (rotated 180° Î in the upper left)! The following BMW regulations describe how to fill in the
title blocks correctly:
„BV-A0“
„BV-Z0“
„BV-ZÄ0“

4.1 Main Sheet Title Block

The main sheet title block can only be found on sheet 1 of the respective BMW part number.
Note: The first line of the change title block in the main sheet title block is named according to
the manufacturer index „a”; New Release (Neufreigabe), Date (Datum) and Name (of the
responsible design engineer at BMW).
The BMW inventory number must be provided in the upper right corner of the sheet 1.
If the drawing refers to more than one part number (assembly), the numbers have to be
provided in a table.
Add to the field “Blatt 1 von/bis x” (Sheet 1 of/to x) the number of sheets including the bill of
materials (if existing). This means, for example, if you have got 2 drawings (sheet 1 / sheet 2)
and a bill of material (sheet 99) you need to enter “Blatt 1 von/bis 3” (Sheet 1 of/to 3).
If required, fill the sheet overview on sheet 1 (including Sheet 99, if existing).

4.2 Continuation Sheet Title Block

Here, the same agreement applies analogously as described in chapter „Main Sheet Title
Block“. The first line of the change title block of the continuation sheet title block does NOT have
the indices ”a”; “Neufreigabe” (New release), "Datum” (Date) and "Name”. Enter further
modifications (the indices “b; c; d;…”) into the continuation sheets if these are affected by the
modifications, . The continuation sheet title block will be provided on every continuation sheet.

4.3 Bills of Materials

Bills of materials are created in Microsoft Excel. Please agree with the responsible BMW Group
specialist department which template to use for the bill of material: templates are provided for
download in the BMW Group Partner Portal at https://b2b.bmw.com under the pull-down menu
„Development Æ Basics Æ Infos about Applications Æ Bills of Material“.
Print the file in PDF format (Acrobat Reader, V4 compatible). (Software: Acrobat Writer).
Deliver both files. The file name (and title block) of a bill of materials created in Excel and PDF
always refers to sheet 99. If the design does not need a parts list, sheet 99 is inapplicable. Bill
of materials containing only up to 5 parts can be integrated into sheet 1.
Describe modifications to the bill of materials on sheet 1 in the field provided for the description
of modifications.

4.4 Single Title Block

Provide each single part with a single title block (Einzelteilkopf). Describe modifications to single
parts in the single part title block, and list the modified parts in the title block of the continuation
sheet.

• Please enter the file name (according to BMW naming convention).

• The file name follows the BMW naming convention (identical with file name of the model,
except the filename suffix)
• The file name suffix must be “.HPG”!
• Select the file location by clicking “…” and selecting the file location from the following
dialog.
• BEFORE clicking „OK“, check the print preview with the button "Vollständige Voransicht“
(Full Preview)!
• When problems occur (e.g.: a drawing is not displayed on the „Blatt“ (sheet) please
check:
- the limits of the drawing
- adjust the plotting area from „Limiten“ (limits) to „Fenster“ (window), by clicking
„Fenster <” (window <) and dragging the outside frame corners into the window.
- does the selected plot paper format match the the drawn frame?

• There are no more adjustments to be made in the plotting window!

6 The File Name (BMW Naming Convention)

The naming of the files must follow the BMW naming convention scheme. The elements need to
be separated by an underscore. There is a suffix after the point. Blanks and special characters
are not allowed.

Generally applies:

F_Part-Number_Sheet_Change-Letter_Date.suffix

Example:
F_1234567_001_a_010726.dwg

Meaning:
F The (capitalized) letter „F“ stands for Fertigungsmittel (tools).
1234567 The 7-digit part number is provided by BMW AG. The 7-digit part number is
provided by BMW AG.
001 The 3-digit number indicates the current sheet number. To each BMW part
number a maximum of 98 sheets and one bill of materials (sheet 99) can be
assigned to.
a The (small) letter „a“ indicates the drawing index of the drawing („Neufreigabe”
(new release) always carries the index „a”)
010726 Date of file creation in the format: year month day (here: July, 26, 2001)
Note: One set of drawings (same item number) must carry the same date for every
file name. The date of the change line „Neufreigabe“ (new release) must
correspond to date and file name.
dwg Suffix (3 letters) allowed suffixes: DWG, HPG, XLS, PDF.

7 Data Exchange / Data Carrier

The following data exchange means are possible:
• Data communication (if installed)
• E-Mail (up to 6 MB; observe non-disclosure agreement)
• CD-ROM (preferably) rewriteable blank CDs are reasonable. Do only use “proprietary
blank CDs”. Also see: “Infos on Data Exchange” in the BMW Group Partner Portal at
https://b2b.bmw.com under the pull-down menu „Development Æ Basics Æ Infos on
Data Exchange“
• Burning speed must be limited to 8x speed. Begin an „open“ session, so that later
additions can be made.

In principle applies:
• The data (carriers) must be checked for viruses, burning spits, correctness,
completeness and must be clearly labelled.
• Always adhere to the BMW naming convention when naming the files!
• Deliver the files in a well-structured file system, which needs to be agreed with the
responsible BMW Group specialist department.
