LEVI CELERIO

Celerio is one of the greatest composers of the country. With such a young
age of 11, he already learned how to play the violin and became a scholar of
academy of music, a school in Manila. Celerio, aside from being known across the
Philippines is also recognized internationally, in fact, he was on the Guiness Book of
Record as the only man who can make music without using anything other than his
mouth and a piece of leaf. He had also produced a wide collection of songs
amounting to 4,000 masterpieces, which for the second time, landed his name on
the Guiness Book of Record again. He also became a National Artist for Music and
Literature on 1992.
Levi Celerio’s music became a great standard and one of the stepping-stones
for the success and development of the Philippine Music. His songs became the
inspirations for many aspiring artists and the messages behind each note lingering
through the ears of the listeners sparked many kinds of emotions that moved the
heart of Filipinos.

LUCIO SAN PEDRO

San Pedro is also one of the notable musicians in the country, he studied
Conservatory of Music at University of the Philippines. He started his interest in
music when he was still 6 years old and learnt to play instruments namely,
Banduria, Octavia, and Ganjo. He contributed many Folk Songs which were well-
loved by Filipinos. He received the National Award for Music on 1991.

LEONOR OROSA

Orosa started dancing at the age of 9. She was considered as the Mother of
Philippine Theater Dance she was also the first to incorporate spinning or twirling
to Filipino Folk Dance. Most of her creations focus on traditional dances or folk
dances and the country’s culture. She received the National Artist for Dance Award
on 1970.

JULIE LIUCH

Julia is a feminist artist, she is a sculptor and she had her first ehibit entitled “if
Joaquin then, villa or bust” on 1983. She helped found KALAYAAN, a feminist
intellectual group. Her sculptures mostly focus on her life experiences and
difficulties. She also helped in molding society’s view on women through her art.

KIDLAT TAHIMIK

Kidlat was first an economist in Paris but his passion for film making
prevailed And he started to take his art seriously. He had his first film entitled,
“perfumed nightmares” which became a huge hit before. He represented the indio
within the Filipinos and his goal was to uplift the term, given to the Filipinos by the
colonizers.

 Discuss the hindrances each artist experienced before they reached the fame
in their own field.

LEVI CELERIO

Despite having one eye blind, it didn’t hinder his passion for his art. He still
performed his music. He also said that artists in the Philippines aren’t well paid and
it is evident up until today’s generation of artists. Aside from getting small payment,
he aloso got some of his work stolen which proves that Filipino artists are not well-
protected by the government.

LUCIO SAN PEDRO

When others choose between their study or their passion and interest, san
pedro had struggled and managed to choose and do both. According to him, Filipino
artists and Filipino art will break without the appreciation of the public., which can
be most relatable to the present generation of artists since it seems that foreign art
whether with fashion, film, music or dance has become a Filipino trend now.

LEONOR OROSA
Orosa struggled financially just to follow her passion and to enrich Filipino
folk dance. She struggled to provide money for the production cost from her own
pocket. According to her, her troupe travels abroad to perform on different
countries but the government does not provide them enough fund to support their
expenses.

JULIE LIUCH

Liuch got sick and experience series of break downs, she became depressed
and desperate but she tried to save herself through her sculptures. Even when her
marriage started falling apart, her art helped pull her up. Her struggles and pain
became the subjects to her sculptures.

KIDLAT TAHIMIK

Tahimik struggled between being a film maker and an economist. At first, he

chose to be practical, thinking that being an economist is the most sensible decision
because his friends persuaded him saying that artists are worthless and he should
just contribute to the economy.

 If you were an artist, hat kind of artist will you be? What art field will you
explore? Why?

If I were an artist, I think I would be an author or a poet. I would probably

explore the field of literature. Because I find words wonderful by being beautiful and
powerful at the same time. Words, above others can influence even the coldest hear.
It can be the sharpest knife that cuts easily within people, shooting dagger straight
through the heart, or it can also be the dullest knife that cuts and creeps slowly
through the skin making the person savior each cut, each word, each scar that will
etch through the mind and soul of the reader.

B. INSIGHT PAPER

 Why is art ageless and timeless?

Art is ageless because an artwork never gets old. The materials used may be
worn out but its essence will still remain. The message will remain however, it may
be seen in a different light based on its current form and the culture of the current
generation it exists in. art can also be ageless in a sense that an artists can be of any
age. Art has no age requirement, even the movement of the hand of an infant can be
an art to express his current mood. Art can be considered timeless because it is not
affected by time. An art can still continue to exist after a century and the message it
portrays may still be relatable as it does before. An art, no matter how many
changes the earth experience through time, will always be relevant.

 Why is art not nature?

Art is not nature because it is made by humans. Art is usually created, or

invented. An art can’t just exist by itself, an art is there because an artist put him
there. However art, may be found within the nature, the patterns found on the
bodies of animals, the sound from the flow of the river and the beauty of the flowers,
can be viewed as art.

 Why does art involve experience?

Art requires experience because it involves the artist’s point of view, beliefs
and opinions. An art is the representation of the artist art is the artist himself. It
involves what an artist saw, what he heard, he tasted, or what he felt. These
experiences become if not the subject, the inspiration of an artwork. These
experiences are triggers to the creativity of an artist.

 Does art always have function? If art work did not have any function, ill it
remain art?

Art always have a function as well as everything has its own purpose. Art
conveys a part if the artists, these creations were made to give a message or to
represent an idea. Will it remain an art without a function? No, it is not an art, but it
will also not exist. Art will never lose its function, everything has its function,
everything exists for a purpose and its mere existence can be a function.
