Studying this subject helps me to understand the other aspects of Art.
Before, all i know is that art includes painting, drawings, photography and etc. but after learning the topics in lesson 1 to lesson 4, my knowledge about it expands. It encompasses a large variety of works, from paintings to sculptures, architecture to design and in modern times, digital art. Lesson 1 titled What is Art: Introduction and Assumption talks about the origin of Art during ancient and medieval times. The word “art’’ comes from the ancient Latin “ARS” which means a craft or specialized form of skill and in medieval latin came to mean something different. The three assumptions of art which are the art is universal, not nature and it involves experience. I thought before that nature is an art but it is not, it’s only considered as an art when it is use as subject. The lesson 2 titled Art Appreciation: Creativity, Imagination, and Expression. This topic is all about how can we make and create an art through our creativity, imagination and expression. According to Jean Paul Sarte, “ The role of art as a creative work is to depict the world in a completely different light and perspective. ‘’ It was also discussed in this lesson, the role of creating in art making: Fine motor skills, Cognitive development, Math skills and Language Skills. There are different forms of art, It can be use for self-expression or a statement, decoration or ornamentation and it has contribution to our society. There are different types of arts such as the visual art, performance art, poetry performance, architecture, dance, literary art, theater art and applied arts. The lesson 3 named Functions and Philosophical Perspective on Art. In this lesson, It was tackled the different function of art which are the personal function of art, social function of art and physical function of art. There are philosophers that have a different views of art. First is Plato, He portrays in his masterpiece, The republic the art as an imitation. For aristotle, art is a form of imitation and considered art as an aid to philosophy in revealing truth. Lastly is Leo tolstoy, he believe that art is a communication of emotion and it does not lie in appearance but how art teaches us. The lesson 4 titled Subject and Content talks about the types of subject which are the representational art, figurative art, and referent. The difference between representational, non-representational and abstract art. It was also stated in this lesson the sources and kinds of subject, the history of arts and how it was during the spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Vincent van gogh is an artist who was attuned with nature, he saw art and nature as an inseparable. One of his best painting is “Wheat fields near auvers (1890)’’. There are different meaning of arts: Factual meaning of arts, Conventional meaning of arts and subjective meaning of art. One of the painting that has a deepest meaning is the Michelangelo’s artwork, “Creation of Adam”.
Lesson 1 from Lesson 4 teaches me many things that I should know as a
student. It is very relevant and helpful for many reasons. Through this lessons, It heps me to able understand the history behind the work, and the period from which the piece originated. The perspectives of differents philosophers helps people to open up their mindset and listen to the different views of each philosophers. It encourages thoughtful conversation and the understanding that there is more than one approach to everything. This lesson helps me alot and I’m looking forward to study and know the further topics in this subject, Art Appreciation.
