INTRODUCTION :

ASTM has defined a geosynthetics a planar product manufactured from a

polymeric material used with soil, rock, earth, or other geotechnical-related material as an
integral part of a civil engineering project, structure, or system. A geotextile is a permeable
geosynthetic made of textile materials. Geogrids are primarily used for enforcement; they are
formed by a regular network of tensile elements with apertures of sufficient size to interlock
with surrounding fill material. Geomembranes are low-permeability geosynthetics used as
fluid barriers. Geotextiles and related products such as nets and grids can be combined with
geomembranes and other synthetics to take advantage of the best attributes of each
component. These products are called geocomposites, and they may be composites of
geotextile-geonets, geotextile-geogrids, geotextile geomembranes, geomembrane-geonets,
geotextile-polymeric cores, and even three-dimensional polymeric cell structures. There is
almost no limit to the variety of geocomposites that are possible and useful. The general
generic term encompassing all these materials is geosynthetic.
Most geosynthetics are made from synthetic polymers such as polypropylene,
polyester, polyethylene, polyamide, PVC, etc. These materials are highly resistant to
biological and chemical degradation. Nat Ural fibers such as cotton, jute, bamboo, etc., could
be used as geotextiles and geogrids, especially for temporary applications, but with few
exceptions they have not been promoted or researched as widely as polymeric
geosynthetics. In manufacturing geotextiles, elements such as fibers or yarns are combined
into planar textile structures. The fibers can be continuous filaments, which are very long thin
strands of a polymer, or staple fibers, which are short filaments, typically 20 to 100 mm long.
The fibers may also be produced by slitting an extruded plastic sheet or film to form thin flat
tapes. In both filaments and slit films, the extrusion or drawing process elongates the
polymers in the direction of the draw and increases the fiber strength.
Geotextile type is determined by the method used to combine the filaments or
tapes into the planar textile structure. The vast majority of geotextiles are either woven or
nonwoven. Woven geotextiles are made of monofilament, multifilament, or fibrillated yarns,
or of slit films and tapes. Although the weaving process is very old, nonwoven textile
manufacture is a modem industrial development

LITERETURE REVIEW:
1.Function and application of geosynthetic in roadways” by Jorge G. Zornberg

Geosynthetics have been successfully used to fulfill a number of functions that

contribute significantly to the good performance of roadways. They include the functions of
separation, filtration, reinforcement, stiffening, drainage, barrier, and protection. One or more
of these multiple functions have been used in at least six important roadway applications. The
applications include the migration of reflective cracking in asphalt overlays, separation,
stabilization of road bases, stabilization of road soft subgrades, and lateral drainage. This
paper illustrates the mechanisms as well as key advances in each one of these multiple
applications
.
2.Role Of Geosynthetic In Rural Roads by Aperna Varma

Geo-synthetics play a significant part in the modern pavement design and

maintenance techniques. The growth in their use in worldwide for the transportation
applications, in particular, has been nothing short of phenomenal. In this work we explain the
types, basic characteristics, function and properties of Geo-synthetics and Laboratory
experiment for classification of soil and find the CBR value of plane soil using Geo-
synthetics sheet in different layers and its use in rural road construction. By several
laboratory tests we find that the use of a layer of Geo-synthetics in sub-base and subgrade of
pavement as a function gives better performance of CBR value in comparison to conventional
pavement layers. In this study, we use the geo-bags as a sheet form in rural road construction.
The function of space and soil subgrade will be economical and easily found by the Irrigation
Department because the geo-bags are widely applied in the Irrigation Department for slope
protection and flood control works. If geo-bags is obtained in a roll form like Geotextiles,
then it will be economical and more suitable for the rural road construction. Using Geo-
synthetics layer in rural road construction giving efficient road (smooth road, saving travel
time, safety, etc.) in comparison than other conventional road construction. Using Geo-
synthetics layer in rural road construction is initially costly but in long term planning it is
economical.

3. Utilization Of Geotextile For Soil Stabilization by D .A .Ogundare

Soil stabilization is the process of improving the load bearing capacity and
engineering properties of subgrade soil to support pavements and structures. This work
examined the stabilization of two soil samples (lateritic and clay) using geotextile as
reinforcement. Geotechnical test were carried out to determine Particle size analysis,
Atterberg Limit test ,moisture content, specific gravity, Compaction test and California
Bearing Ratio test. The two soil samples according to American Association of State and
Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) are classified as A-7-6 and A-7-5 which are
adjudged as ‘poor’ subgrade materials. CBR test were conducted with and without non-
woven geotextiles with the non-woven geotextiles placed at depths H/4 from the top and base
surfaces of the soil in single layer under unsoiled conditions to determine the strength of the
soil samples. The result showed that the strength of the soil samples increased by introducing
non-woven geotextile in the soil as the one placed at depth H/4 from the base surface show
higher CBR values (15.1% and 19.6%) than when placed at depth H/4 (14.1% and 18.2%)
from the top surface. The experimental results give a clear indication that the presence of
geotextiles increases the CBR value of the soil thus, geotextile should be employed as a
modernized form of improving road construction on poor soils and to reduce the layer
thickness of pavements.

4. Application Of Geosynthetic In Pavement Design by Murad AI Qurishee

Geosynthetics have been widely used in recent thirty years for separation
,reinforcement, filtration, drainage, and containment functions of the pavement design. The
use and sales of geosynthetics materials are increasing 10% to 20% per year. This paper
reviews research into the application of geosynthetic materials such as geogrids, geotextiles,
geocomposites, geonets, geomembranes, geosynthetic clay liners, geofoam, and geocells in
pavement design by focusing on the literature review, basic useful characteristics and basic
information collection of geosynthetics. Among them the study focuses on the reduction of
base course thickness by using the geogrid material in the base course layer without changing
load carrying capacity and performance of the pavement. Modified AASHTO design result
shows that about 20% to 40% base course reduction is possible using geogrid in pavement
design, with greater percentage reduction for stronger subgrade materials.

5. Application Of Geotextile Used In Road Pavement Construction” by A.A.BHOSALE

Due to increasing traffic day by day various problems regarding to road are
created. Due to heavy volume and heavy traffic roads are damaged very earlier. In a village
there is mostly black cotton soil and swelling is the main property of black cotton soil.
Because of heavy rain swelling can take place so that compression and contraction takes
place and due to that undulation can takes place. To avoid all that things we can use
geotextile material and compare to the normal road .Polypropylene has the tendency to avoid
the percolation of the rain water through it. So the swelling can be avoided. Due to this
undulation can be avoided so ultimately life span of the road increases. Geotextile so also
helpful to avoid undulation. But as compared to the polypropylene and geotextile we knew
the different properties of this material. So that knowing all the property and by using
geotextile bearing capacity of soil increase, and also the improvement of strata. So that
ultimately undulation can be avoided and life span of road increases. Considerable length
planned to be constructed in India under various programs under construction over poor sub
grade soils. The performs of the road largely depends on properties on sub grade soil. Once
such a sub grade soil often encountered is the black cotton soil.
