ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I express my sincere and deep gratitude to Senior
General Manager of Ordnance Factory Medak for extremely valuable
guidance and permitting me for 15 days to visit and helping me in
the project. I am very much thankful to him for his constant support
encouragement and for providing the required facilities.
I extend my hand to thank to Shir ANURAG SHARMA
(JT.G.M) who has guided me in the project.
At this time pleasing moment of having successful
completion my project I wish to convey my since thanks and
gratitude to HRD section officers and staff who helped in attaining
practical experience at ODF.
I also express my sincere thanks to my Head of the
Department of Mechanical Engineering encouraging me to do project
in Govt of Indian Ministry of Defence Organization (Ordnance
Factory, Yeddumailaram Sangareddy).
STEERING

Turning is a basic function of the vehicle born by steering

system which changes the direction of the vehicle by turning wheels
through steering operation.

Functions of Steering :

 With the help of steering system, the driver can control the
vechile however he wants.
 The steering provides stability to the vechile on the road .
 It minimizes wheel wear and tear
 It prevents road shocks reaching to the driver.
 The steering provides self-rightening effect after taking a turn.
Material used :

Material used mainly for preparation of Steering of BMP II

vehicle is Aluminium.

Properties of Aluminium:
Assembly of Steering of BMP II vehicle :

Components of Steering are:

1. Shafts.
2. Gear box.

3. Balancer.

4. Lever.
5. Handle.
6. Dogs (4).
7. Shaft rods.
8. Heavy pickup Shaft.
The gear box of steering column is filled with shafts attached
with dogs the casing of the gear box body having the holes through is
filled with the balls made of hard steel. The balls and dogs are the
main components of the gearing system. For shifting and changing of
gear for neutral to another gear. There are total 6 gears five forward
gears and one reverse gear.
The dogs are attached to three shafts with each one and one
pin to the dog. Dogs are the main component to change the gear and
control the vehicle.
In the assembly of the steering first we take the shaft with
some welding and joints. On the either side of the main shaft we
attach the gear box and the balancer body to the shaft. In the gear
box first we will keep the steel balls in the gear box holes. Now we fix
the three gear shafts and fill the total gear box with grease and close
the holes of the gear shafts with nuts and bolts. Close the main body
with the gaskets and the bracket.
One the other side of the main shaft fix the handle and lever to
the main shaft. From the one side to the other side of the gear box
we attach another shaft that is called heavy pickup gear used when
there are heavy lifts and jumps.
We apply grease in the joining parts where ever required and
close those joining with the rubber bodies tightening them with the
mild steel wires. In the total assembly we use the spring washers for
tightening of nuts and bolts in assembly.
Cover the gear shafts with the plastic cover for prevention of
dust to contact with the grease. After total assembly of the steering
there are total 7 linkages to fix the steering to the vehicle, with those
linkages the steering column is fixed to the vehicle engine.
ASSEMBLED STEERING COLOUMN:
PEDAL CLOUMN
There are three foot pedal located on the floor beneath the
steering wheel. The accelerator, the brake and the clutch. The pedal
on the right is the accelerator- often referred to as the gas pedal.
The position of accelerator, brake and clutch are always in the
passion of “ ABC” no matter it is left hand drive vhicle (LHD) or right
hand drive vehicle (RHD) also it is easy to remember in that way, the
meaning of ABC is as follows:-
A - Accelerator
B - Brake
C - Clutch
In RHD vehicle the accelerator is at right side that there is
brake and last there is clutch. The sequence is same for both types as
mentioned earlier also the brake pedal is kept bit upward to identify
it at the time of emergency.

Components of Pedal:
1.Main Shaft.
2. Clutch Lever.
3.Accelerator Lever.
4. Brake Lever.
Assembly of Pedal:
The pedal assembly completely prepared in the LMS in the
Code section. The pedal is the assembly of many small components
the main shaft consists of three levers attached to it.
The main function of the brake system is to decelerate or
decrease the speed of a vehicle. By stepping on the brake pedal, the
brake pads compress against the rotor attached to the wheel which
then forces the vehicle to slow down due to friction.
The main function of the clutch is transmitting the torque from
the engine to the drivetrain. Smoothly deliver the power from the
engine to enable smooth vehicle movement. Perform quietly and to
reduce drive- related vibration.
The main function of the accelerator is to control the flow rate
of the fuel into the combustion chamber. Whenever we apply the
accelerator, it opens the throttle valve which increases fuel input to
the engine, therefore increasing the speed of the vehicle.
