Research Methodology
Test 1

Exercise 01: Briefly answer the following

What is the purpose of reviewing literature in research?................................................................................. ……..

What is the importance of formulating a research problem?……………………………………………………….

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Exercise 02: Read the questions carefully and select the appropriate option.

A common sociological finding is that as people’s education level increases, their income also increases. What
type of relationship between education level and income is commonly found?

A) A Positive Correlation B) A Negative Correlation C) A cause-effect Relationship D) No Relationship has

been Established. Justify your answer………………………………………………………………………………..

I would like to explain what causes income inequality at the county level in the US. However, there are not
very well constructed sociological theories in this area of research. So, I begin my study by collecting and
analysing the data. After I’ve done the analysis, I consider the findings and attempt to explain them by creating
a theory. Which type of relationship between theory and data does my work reflect most closely?

A) Deduction B) Induction. Justify your answer ……………………………………………………………………

Which research is most concerned about generalizing its findings?

A/Quantitative research B/Qualitative research C/Both A and B.

Justify……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Exercise 03: which type of researches are the following, Quantitative or Qualitative? Briefly justify
your answer

McDonald, Freeland, Thomas, and Moore (2001) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of a
preoperative pain management intervention for relieving pain among elders undergoing surgery.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
…………………………………………………………………………………………………

Sadala and Mendes (2000) explored the experiences of 18 nurses who cared for patients who had been pronounced brain
dead but kept alive to serve as organ donors.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Exploring ways of which females are portrayed in the print media by analysing newspaper and magazines
advertisements……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Testing the relationship between the scores on an intelligence test and scores on a personality test……………………..
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….............

Exercise 04: Analyse the following methodology and answer the questions

A researcher wanted to know if songs have an impact on fluency. After deciding his methodology, he created two
groups, an experimental group, which will receive the treatment (listening to songs) and a control group, which will not
receive any intervention. To make the study possible, a group of 18 students majoring in English was chosen to be the
control group and another 18 private school students who suffer from stuttering, the most common fluency disorder, as
the experimental group. After one year, the comparison between the post-tests of both the experimental and the control
group revealed that songs do not develop fluency since the post-test’s results of the control group were much higher
than those of the experimental group.

A/ what is the type of research? Identify the dependent and independent variables.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

B/Are there any other ways to manipulate the independent variable in the previous methodology? Identify them.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

C/ what is the problem with the researcher’s methodology?..........................................................................................

D/ what is the solution to this problem?...............................................................................................................

E/ Assuming that the previous research was investigating the effect of stuttering on the oral class scores. In this
research, the scores of students with stuttering were compared with the scores of students who do not have any
speech disorder.

What is the independent variable in this case? ………………………………………………………………………….

How this independent variable differs from the one of question A ?..............................................................................

What is the type of research in this case?..........................................................................................................................

F/ suggest ONE research question for both the research from the previous text and the research of
question E.
