The Role of Civil Engineering Education and Practice towards achieving

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Civil engineering is a discipline that concerns the designing, building and maintaining
of man-made products and constructions, including roads, bridges, canals, dams, buildings, and more.
It is a broad coarse of discipline but is one, if not the most important discipline that is needed in our
world nowadays. Starting from micro. In order for one to sustain in living, one needs a structure to live
in, considering the temperatures not constant and weathers changing every now and then. A strong
and dependable structure is mostly needed which civil engineers make. Up to macro. Economy and
globalization will not prosper without structures of tourism, transportations, communications,
healthcare, businesses, food storage and supplies, and many more. Which a civil engineer is made
up for. Why study civil engineering? It is needed because catastrophes and natural disasters cannot
be evaded and it is always happening once in a while. Structures are being destroyed and no one can
be able to repair and make such structures besides civil engineers. Also in our advancing society,
structures can be incorporated with latest advancements for a more reliable and easier living which a
civil engineer is carved up for. So basically, the role of civil engineering education and practices is very
important based from the explanations above and for us to be able to sustain life and sustain
development for the future.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), sustainability is a set of

economic, environmental and social conditions (aka "The Triple Bottom Line") in which all of society
has the capacity and opportunity to maintain and improve its quality of life indefinitely without
degrading the quantity, quality or the availability of economic, environmental and social resources.
Sustainable development is the application of these resources to enhance the safety, welfare, and
quality of life for all of society. Which simply means that in order to achieve sustainable development,
one should be able to maintain and improve structures that made life easier without degrading its
quality and integrity but also can cope up with advancing society. Which civil engineering education is
all about and is producing civil engineers cut out to fill this need. In this regard, civil engineers must
actively promote and participate in multidisciplinary teams with other professionals, such as ecologists,
economists, and sociologists, and work with the communities served and affected to effectively
address the issues and challenges of sustainable development.
