FISHING SECTOR:

Using ICT to help increase fish production: Presentation by A Ravindra, WASSAN in Livelihood Asia
Summit 2014 held at Delhi on Dec 11th 2014. Mr A Ravindra – Director of WASSAN – talked about
the Community Based Fisheries Value Chain model that they are delivering with PACS. The project
uses GIS technology to map water bodies and analyse their fish production potential. In every
village, two Community Resource Persons are trained to use a mobile application to input data about
the water bodies on a regular basis. Data collected includes the size of the water body, its location,
pH levels and seasonality. Advice is then received, dependent upon the data inputted, to help fish
producers to increase their productivity. As Mr Ravindra said “This is an example of how ICT can be
used beyond monitoring, acting as a platform for knowledge sharing, collecting data and connecting
producers to scientific information.”

Fishery Analyst Online is a web GIS application aiming to effectively query, analyze and visualize
temporal and spatial patterns of fishery dynamics. The main functions are quantitative estimation
and visualization of catch, effort, fishing success and their variation in space and time. It also
provides a mean for analysis of fishing vessel utilization, data quality control, and deriving
information on the location of important economic and threatened species. It was developed using
the ArcGIS Server Java Script APIs, the Dojo framework and Google Chart APIs.

AGRICULTURE SECTOR:
A Cabinet official admits the agriculture sector has been neglected for more than two decades and
with aging farmers and climate change in the equation, food security in the Philippines is becoming a
big challenge. - ANC, The World Tonight, May 21, 2015
Attracting the youth into Agriculture: ICTs and value chain development are changing the
perspective of farming in Africa and Latin America. From a back breaking, hardly remunerative,
labour consuming task to a much more profitable and solid source of income. This video illustrates a
youth's ICT-enabled journey into profitable farming, based on the publication 'ICT4D Effects: Youth,
ICTs and Agriculture'. Through the use of ICT as a tool and driver for development and social
change, IICD continues to accelerate development by building capacities of farmers, entrepreneurs,
teachers, students and health professionals, with a special focus on women and the youth. Most of
them live in remote rural areas and are now using ICTs to access information, communicate and do
their jobs more effectively and efficiently. The publication 'ICT4D Effects: Youth, ICTs and
Agriculture' is informed by the findings from recent research focused on three projects under the
Connect4Change (C4C) Economic Development programme located in western Kenya, which focus
on enhancing agricultural productivity and access to markets. The research investigated the linkages
between the introduction and the use of ICT in farming and the interest of youth in farming and value
chain development. (publication available at: http://www.iicd.org/about/publication...) To learn more

WOMENS SECTOR:
RIIR is about facilitating how the women can get from where they are now to where they should
be.Its about moving them from labor to entrepreneurship, from poverty to potential wealth, and from
rags to riches.
For a few years now, women living nearby a garbage dump have seen radical changes in their lives.
A young and creative woman, with the support of famous designers, decided to help them by getting
them involved in the tailoring of fashion accessories based on scraps of fabric recovered onsite.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE:
Marami sa kanila ang nananatili pa rin sa lupang kinagisnan. May ilang nakikipagsapalaran na rin sa
mga lungsod. Sa pinakahuling datos ng National Commission on Indigenous People, may higit
OPINION: The increase of Globalization in the Philippines will be the cause to a loss of filipino
culture and traditions. Of course they would think it will improve the lives of the tribe! This is again
another bribing method used by money-making people to make profit of their land if their plan is put
forward. They don't care about those people's opinions and what not. Their main goal is to
encourage them to agree and introduce them to a new lifestyle where money making is the prime
objective with little consideration to the detrimental effect to the rich Indigenous culture of the "Agta"
people. It is very depressing to know that there are only few remaining active Indigenous group of
people in our country, yet our government neglects to protect these people and defend them of their
rights to their own land. We should just respect and give them freedom to live their own lives the way
they are taught to by their ancestors. Sad... Absolutely distressing..
