“Interventions and Implications of Career Development Programs of

People with Disabilities: A Filipino Context”

Career development is an important thing in the lives of people who are in

the workplace. This event gives them satisfaction, eagerness, and perseverance

to do their job and to move from one stage to another. When it comes to people

with disabilities, it is a challenge for them to be able to cope up in the

environment. Specifically, persons with disabilities experience inequity when they

are being compared to people who do not have physical impaired where they feel

that they are treated differently (Flores, et al., 2014). Moreover, studies found out

that human resource policies, in particular incentives for advancement do

discriminate disabled workers (Potgieter et al., 2017). One more thing is that

people who belong to this kind of group belong to the low-wage earners

(Lindstorm et al., 2014). These difficulties that they are facing indeed is alarming

for us to respond on how these people will advance or grow in their careers for

the fact that they can also contribute to the betterment of the society one way or

another. With that, there are also some factors influence their career

development. In the study of Lindstorm, et al. (2014), advocacy and expectations

of the family, school-based work experiences, job development services, and


work environments do influence their opportunities in their careers. In addition to

that, in the study of Dispenza et al. (2019), there are categories in which the

individual makes his/her career development trajectory, these are Psychosocial

Capital, Psychosocial Conflicts, Intersectional Identity Disclosure, and Work-Life

Balance. Lastly, perceptions of discrimination by these groups of people are

found related to the inequity of development opportunities because of their

disability (Flores et al., 2014).

Indeed, inclusiveness is important in the workplace from the

perspective of people who have disabilities. Different studies showed above the

challenges they face and what are the factors that affect their career

development. However, in light of the given difficulties and determinants, the

intervention or means of giving development to these groups of people was not

discussed. Also, the factors that influence them might be different as to the

Filipino Context. Moreover, what will be the effects of the interventions that will

be given to them.

With this kind of research. I would like to use a qualitative method of

research. This type of research will be exploratory for the researcher to have an

understanding of the reasons and beliefs of an individual. Moreover, qualitative

research would help the researcher to have a deeper and wider view of the

problem. I would also like to conduct survey questionnaires as regards to the


effectiveness of this type of counseling method. With that, these will be observed

throughout the process of the study:

1. A purposive kind of sampling will be also used whereas counselors who

use this kind of framework in counseling and with their respective clients

who experienced this type of counseling. Confidentiality must also be

observed.

2. An interview schedule will be validated by specific people who are

specialized in this field for a more appropriate method of the flow of the

interview.

3. The administration must strictly observe anonymity, and confidentiality.

Also, the right number of respondents must be given attention to.

4. Thematic analysis will be used in analyzing the data for an in-depth

analysis of data given by the respondents.

5. The process of the data includes familiarization, data coding, theme

development, and revision will be done for precise information and

interpretation of data.

Given this kind of research dealing with people with disabilities, I would

foresee my study that in this period, our country would give inclusiveness in this

group of people. Whereas, by providing laws that would carry out and strengthen

their career development for their future. Also, to see if there is a lack of
programs or reformation of the current programs for them. It is my anticipation to

see the development of interventions that are being given and what are the

effects of it to the Filipinos with disabilities, if they are satisfied or not with the

enactment of those programs. Moreover, if these programs being stipulated

would carry out a good result where it will boost their confidence and uplift their

morale despite their conditions.
