CHAPTER 4
4.1 INTRODUCTION
The first division discusses the results obtained from the studies on
the characteristic improvement properties on natural dyed cotton fabric. This
main division is further classified into six subdivisions that contain the studies
of six major dyes (Bv, Bo, Tc, Pg, Al and Cp) and its combinations for shade
variation and functional effect on cotton fabric.
The second division discusses the results obtained from the studies
on the characteristic improvement properties on natural dyed silk fabric. This
main division is further classified into six subdivisions that contain the studies
of six major dyes (Bv, Bo, Tc, Pg, Al and Cp) and its combinations for shade
variation and functional effect on silk fabric.

The third division discusses the results obtained from the studies on
the characteristic improvement properties on natural dyed wool fabric. This
main division is further classified into six subdivisions that contain the studies
of six major dyes (Bv, Bo, Tc, Pg, Al and Cp) and its combinations for shade
variation and functional effect on wool fabric.
The major natural dyes Bv, Bo, Tc, Pg, Al and Cp combinations
with other natural dyes If, Rc and Pp for shade variation, and combinations
with Vn, Eo, Ab and Ai to impart functional variation (antimicrobial
property) on cotton fabric are discussed in this division. The studies contain
FTIR analysis for the dye extract, color fastness properties (light, wash and
crocking), antimicrobial assessment and K/S evaluation for all the six major
dyes and their combination on natural dyed cotton fabric.

The K/S values for the Bv natural dyed cotton fabric are given in
Table 4.4. The average data for K/S value is around 12 which are considered
as good color strength value. Standard method of interpretation of data with
respect to sunlight and artificial light was done according to AATCC
procedure. The K/S values were determined from ΔE. The berberis vulgaris
by itself gives good color strength value on cotton fabric and also which is
retained when combined with other natural sources.

gram (+) and 750-850 for gram (-) culture. The reduction% of microbial
attack is more in the case of gram (+) culture than gram (-) culture. This
indicates that terminalia chebula when applied on cotton fabric as a natural
dye increases the antimicrobial character, required for the cotton fabrics.
The K/S values for the Tc natural dyed cotton fabric are given in
Table 4.12. The average data for K/S value is around 13 for the Tc
combination natural dyed cotton fabric. This value facilitates that terminalia
chebula natural dye contains good color strength for good dyeing on cotton
fabric by its own as well as with the combination of other natural sources.

The major natural dyes Bv, Bo, Tc, Pg, Al and Cp combination
with other natural dyes If, Rc, Pp for shade variation, and combination with
Vn, Eo, Ab and Ai to impart functional variation (antimicrobial property) on
silk fabric were discussed in this division. The studies contained color
fastness property, antimicrobial assessment and K/S evaluation for all the six
major dyes and their combination for the dyed silk fabric.
4.3.1 Berberis Vulgaris (Bv) and its Combination on Silk Fabric for
Shade Variation and Functional Effect
The K/S values for the Bv natural dyed silk fabric are shown in
Table 28. The average data for K/S value is more than 12 which are
94
considered as good color strength value. The berberis vulgaris by itself gives
good color strength value on silk fabric and for the combination dyeing on
silk fabric, there is no significant changes in the color strength values.

4.3.2 Bixa Orellana (Bo) and its Combination on Silk Fabric for
Shade Variation and Functional Effect
Table 4.29 Application method of bixa orellana (Bo) and its combination
on silk fabric
The K/S values for Bo natural dyed silk fabric are given in
Table 4.32. The average data for K/S value is around 12 which are considered
100
to be preferable color strength for textile dyeing. The bixa orellana itself gives
good color strength value on silk fabric. Many combinations of natural dyeing
with Bo on silk fabric give marginal increase in the color strength that
exhibits the value around 13.

The major natural dyes Bv, Bo, Tc, Pg, Al and Cp combinations
with other natural dyes If, Rc, Pp for shade variation, and combinations with
Vn, Eo, Ab and Ai to impart functional variation (antimicrobial property) on
wool fabric were discussed in this division. The studies contained color
fastness property, antimicrobial assessment and K/S evaluation for all the six
major dyes and their combination for the dyed wool fabric.

The results for the fastness properties towards light, washing and
crocking on Tc dyed wool fabric is given in Table 4.58. There is a moderate
(3) to good (4) light fastness rating on Tc dyed wool fabric. The washing
fastness is good both in the case of color change and color stain. There is a
good crocking fastness in the dry state (3-4) compared to the wet state which
is poor to moderate only (2-3). The difference between color change and color
stain in both wet and dry state is only marginal, for the crocking fastness of
Tc dyed wool fabric.

The K/S values of Cp natural dyed wool fabric are given in the
Table 4.72. The average data for K/S value is between 12 and 13 which are
160
considered as good color strength value for textile dyed fabrics. The color
strength of wool fabric dyed by Cp is around 13. In some combination of
dyed wool fabric, the color strength is marginally increased.
