Review Related Literature

This chapter represents the review related literature where the researchers of the related

studies presented. The research we get will help to evaluate and explain the problem in this qualitative

study.

Factors Having a Mismatch of Strand in Senior High School and Course in College

K-12 Program offered different various tracks in basic education which students can freely

choose what exactly they want to study according on what course they want to apply in college. It will

help students to prepare for college and also to prepare students to make crucial decisions that will

impact their future. Unfortunately there are situations where students have difficulty on choosing a

right strand which may lead a mismatch to a course they will going to take in the future.

According to Julian Ongchoco, (2017) one of the factors why students have difficulty in choosing

a right strand is because it is not leveled in their interest. There are student who choose a strand even

though they are not sure if this strand fits to their interest. Students may possibly think that all their

diagnostics and personality tests indicate that were suit for not just one, but a number of strands.

Another factor is students are afraid to face the different challenges in each tracks. Like for example if

they will choose the STEM which is an academic strand the first thing that comes up in their mind, this

strand is for smart and intelligent student only. It is difficult to stay and take a lot of time because it has

lot of paper works to finish.

In that case instead of choosing a track that will fit their desire course, they would rather choose

a track were they think they can easily to cope with. Eventually this factors will result to mismatch of

strand and course of the students.

Another factor is on how really prepared that a school is? Do they have the requirements that

will apply for senior high school students?

According to Punongbayan, (2019) many schools nationwide were grossly ill-prepared for senior

high school and found themselves scrambling for resources. A study by the Philippine Institute for

development studies (PIDS) showed that not nearly enough schools were ready to provide the various

tracks and strands. In school year 2017-2018 (the SHS programs second year of implementation) only a

paltry 7% of schools could provide 5 or more strands. As much as 38% could provide just one.

In other words, only a few could provide a reasonably diverse set of tracks and strands. For

schools that could somehow offer SHS, many had to make do with in adequate classrooms, laboratories,

or workshops. G

Because of having incomplete tracks and strands of schools many students will force to choose

another one. The track and strand they want to get are not available so they need to have a second

option. But if the time that they will get into college and want to have the course that they really want

to study, they will have difficulties to deal with subjects or lessons. It is because they didn’t encounter it

before.
