What is a compound sentence?

A compound sentence is a sentence having two independent clauses.

We use compound sentences to give more information at a time therefore making a sentence more
meaningful and persuasive. Making a compound sentence can still give a simple thought easy to
understand yet, saving the effort of making many simple sentences.

A problem and solution sentence is a sentence pattern where there is a concerning issue and a remedy
to the said issue.

Examples of Compound Sentences that show Problem and Solution Sentence

Ellah is hungry so she eats a lot.

My tooth really ached so I went to the Dentist for check up.

I was soaking wet so I changed my clothes immediately.

He failed in the test last time so he studied hard to pass the next exam.

Leah suddenly choked in the middle of the meal so her mother gave her a glass of water to drink.

How do we join these independent clauses to a compound sentence?

There are three ways:

1. By using a comma

I did not pass the test, I forgot to answer the back page.

2. By using a semicolon

I did not pass the test; I forgot to answer the back page.

3. By using a conjunction.

I did not pass the test for I forgot to answer the back page.

What is an independent clause?


An independent clause is a group of words with a subject and a predicate. Examples of independent
clauses.

Clause 1: I did not pass the test.

Clause 2: I forgot to answer the back page.

What are coordinating conjunctions?

Coordinating conjunctions are conjunctions that are used to join two independent clauses to form a
compound sentence. Just remember the acronym FANBOYS which stands for

For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

Here are the use of each coordinating conjunction and examples.

For (is used to state a reason)

I did not pass the test for I forgot to answer the back page.

And (is used to add information)

I came to the party late and all eyes were staring at me.

Nor ( means not even one)

I do not want your advice today nor I would want your advice in the future.

But (to state contradiction)

I want to shop in the new mall but it is raining heavily outside.

Or ( is used between two options)


I can help you find a job or I can recommend you to a friend.

Yet (is used to give contradiction like but)

I wanted to beg for his love yet, I realized it is inappropriate.

So ( shows the consequence or result of something)

I did not make my assignment so my teacher gave me a failing grade.
