Course Description
This course introduces to concepts of radio and television receiver. It covers basics of
modulation techniques and radio frequency. The course introduces scanning methods of
television, television signal compression techniques and various types of advance displays. This
course make students familiar to types television and radio communication.

The objectives of this course are
1. to strengthen the ability of students in the field of radio communication and television
signal reception.
2. to impart knowledge about modern television scanning and decoding techniques.

Course Content
Basics of Radio Communication
Elements of Radio Receiver and Transmitter: Super heterodyne receivers and their
characteristics; Different receiver architectures; Radio Frequency (RF) and Intermediate
Frequency (IF) amplifiers, mixers.

Basic Concept of Television


Scanning methods, Interlaced scanning, horizontal and vertical synchronization. Introduction to
camera tubes, aspect ratio, Kell factor, horizontal and vertical resolution, video bandwidth,
positive and negative modulation, composite video signal. Television transmission- vestigial
sideband (VSB) transmission, TV Channels, TV Standard, TV Channels bands. Basic block
diagram of monochrome TV receiver.

Color Television
Color fundamental, compatibility, frequency interleaving, color mixing, color camera tube, color
purity. Concept of color picture tubes-static and dynamic convergence. Encoder, decoder and
color different signals comparison, Color TV transmitter and receiver block diagram.

Advanced TV Systems and Techniques


Introduction to digital compression techniques, joint pictures expert group (JPEG), moving
pictures expert group (MPEG) techniques. Block diagram of digital TV-transmitter and receiver.
Advanced displays - plasma, LCD, LED, organic LED. Introduction to High Definition TV
(HDTV) transmitter and receiver.

Advanced Broadcasting Systems


Introduction to digital cable TV, conditional access system (CAS), DTH system, video on
demand. Introduction to 3D DTV system, study of closed circuit TV (CCTV) and digital
terrestrial TV (DTV). Introduction to IPTV and mobile TV.
