NYSF Interview Questions

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Interview with Rotary

Questions they ask you!
1. Why do you want to attend the NYSF?
They usually want you to say too meet new people, learn more science and stuff
2. Why should we choose you?
They want to know what makes you better than others so it is good to say stuff like I
am approachable and easy to make friends with. Say you are interested in learning
about new science discoveries and meeting scientists.
3. What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?
So they want to know your science related career; the most common answer is
medicine so to stand out you might have to lie and say I want to become a
meteorologist and act against climate change or I want to become an engineer and
look at robotics. Staying away from health sciences is the trick. Say something
different  After you state the career you want to do, say which year 12 subjects you
plan to do for it and what university degree you plan to go in to. Be specific and if
your interview is held at a university say that you want to study the particular course
at that university. An astronomer or a physicist or a geneticist are also some of the
interviewers preferred careers.
4. What do you know about the Rotary club?
Make sure you research about your rotary club and read about at least 3 or 4 projects
they sponsor. You should also know some active members of your rotary club and
whether it has any international connections.
5. What is the biggest challenge facing science today?
Read the news and talk about climate change, diseases and most of all “moving
forward with new technology.”
6. What extra-curricular activities do you do?
For this make sure you mention a list of at least five. I said; dance, piano, taekwondo
and talk about volunteer work you have done. Make sure you mention a sport and
say you dance or play a musical instrument and that you are keen on performing at
the forum. Because they want you to perform at the forum so that your state looks
good 
7. Then they ask you to pick one of the current affairs they give you. I had 1)United
nations 2)Amnesty International 3)Nuclear war.
They also ask you your opinion about it and whether you are for or against their
actions.

NYSF Interview Questions

8. Australian students liking towards mathematics and science have decreased. What
can we do about that?
You got to talk about what you have done here. You have to say that you have done
the Westpac maths competition and that you enjoyed it. Tell them you have also
done science related competitions like the titration competitions, science and
engineering challenge, UNSW science competition, Big science competition. And tell
the interviewer that you enjoyed these activities so they should encourage them at
schools.
9. The forum is going to introduce you to a lot of new technology and new discussions
and lectures. How would you react and handle topics that you do not know?
They want you to say that you would listen to everyone and ask them if you don’t
understand and listen and listen as much as you can.
10.What are your hobbies?
Say something different and interesting. Don’t say reading. Say dancing, cooking and
sciency hobbies like bird watching, travelling, dissecting frogs.

What to take to the interview?

>photo ID
>An achievement portfolio: because you will be a year 11 student it is recommended that
you show your high school achievements and not anything from primary school.
Take you certificates from Westpac Maths competitions, titrations competitions, Big science
competitions
Show them certificates of some kind of sports achievement and some kind of music,
debating or public speaking achievement and if you can a Duke of Edinburgh award or a
Bronze Medallion. Take in at least 2 personal references if you hadn’t handed them in
before with your application. The personal references should probably be from science
teachers and should show your massive interest in science.
If you have the liking towards engineering and there is something interesting that you have
made previously, bring that in to the interview because it shows that you are keen.
NYSF is a lot of fun but not getting in does not mean you miss out on a great deal of stuff.
Its just another opportunity 
Try to smile all the time and at least pretend like you love life and are jumpy and full of
energy and joy.

NYSF Interview Questions

If you can answer these questions, have good at least two personal references and lots of
certificates from sport, music and science and maths competitions you should be fine.
Always smile 

Good Luck!
I was a successful applicant and interviewee at the national youth science. I have
also been a interviewer for three years and I know that anyone can attend this
forum if you the answers to these questions. It is true you should be academic but
your grades do not have to be spectacular. DUX students have missed out on the
opportunity to attend the NYSF while their peers have attended it because the
mastered the interview questions. So best of luck. DO your best and do not worry if
you miss out because it is nothing more than another learning experience. And
people who miss out may later excel in more prestigious careers.  Just blitz the
interview 
