3. General Background Information
History
Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner, a married couple who worked as computer operations staff members
at Stanford University founded Cisco Systems in 1984. The name "Cisco" was derived from the city
name, San Francisco.
While Cisco was not the first company to develop and sell a router, it was one of the first to sell
commercially successful routers supporting multiple network protocols. Today, Cisco's largest
routers are primarily used to deliver IP packets.
In 1990, the company was listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Cisco acquired a variety of
companies to bring in products and talent into the company, like Stratacom, Scientific-Atlanta and
Linksys. Several acquired companies have grown into $1Bn+ business units for Cisco. In late March
2000, at the height of the dot-com boom, Cisco was the most valuable company in the world, with a
market capitalization of more than US$500 billion. In July 2009, it is still one of the most valuable
companies. The company was a 2002 - 2003 recipient of the Ron Brown Award, a U.S. presidential
honor to recognize companies "for the exemplary quality of their relationships with employees and
communities".
The Company has built its Globalization Centre East in Bangalore for $1 billion and 20% of Cisco's
leaders will be based there.
Cisco’s VISION
“Changing the way we work, live, play and learn…”
Cisco’s MISSION
“To shape the future of the internet by creating unprecedented value and opportunity for customers,
employees, investors and ecosystem partners.”
Values
At Cisco they believe that community belongs to everyone and connecting and collaborating with
others is a key element of their culture. Making the world a smaller place through technology and
using it to enhance life experiences is something they take seriously.
The core values of Cisco are the intention of satisfying customer needs and positively contributing to
the world and others. Cisco employees are committed to giving back. Volunteering is a huge part of
Cisco’s culture.
6
Besides, corporate and social responsibility is a key component to Cisco’s culture and Cisco's
products promote collaboration and communication of information that is used not only to power
businesses, but to modernize governments, support education, and foster economic development.
In addition, Cisco is committed to operating in an environmentally-responsible manner, creating
energy-efficient products, providing solutions to its customers that help them to meet their
environmental goals, and inspiring its employees to get involved and take action.

"Soft skills", such as being a teamplayer or being flexible, are becoming gradually more
important than the traditional factors, such as personal grades and skills, when hiring new
people.
In order to come to a good interview, the participants are not only dependent on their own
interviewing skills, but also on the quality of the used medium.
Being yourself at all times will eventually lead to the job that fits you the best.
International meetings and conferences : A uniform or universal way in which one expresses
him/herself without being misunderstood either from an intercultural or interpersonal point
of view, does exist.
Being present in multiple social networks can easily get out of control and destroy your
chance of being hired and/or destroy your professional career
