1. For k ∈ N, let
C k [a, b] = {f : [a, b] → K | f (k) ∈ C[a, b]}.
Then C k [a, b] is a linear space over K with respect to the pointwise addition and scalar multiplication.
Define
kf k = kf k∞ + kf 0 k∞ + . . . kf (k) k∞ ∀f ∈ C k [a, b],
then show that (C k [a, b], k · k) is a Banach space.
2. A normed linear space X is a Banach space iff every absolutely convergent series in X is convergent in
X. Is it necessarily true in normed linear space?
3. Show that a nonzero normed linear space X is a Banach space iff Sr = {x ∈ X : kxk = r} is complete
with respect to the induced metric for some r > 0.
4. If X is a Banach space, then show that the quotient space X/Y is a Banach Space with the quotient
norm.
5. If a normed linear space has a Schauder basis, then show that it is separable. Hence, conclude that
{e1 , e2 , . . .} is not a Schauder basis for (l∞ , k · k∞ ).
(Hint: Show that (l∞ , k · k∞ ) is not separable).
6. Show that the quotient norm of the Quotient space l∞ /c0 is given by
k(xn ) + c0 k = lim sup |xn | ∀(xn ) ∈ l∞ .

7. Let X be a nonzero normed linear space and let Y be a normed linear space such that B(X, Y ) is a
Banach space. Show that Y is a Banach space.
8. Let Y = {(xn ) ∈ l1 : x1 − 3x2 = 0} and define g(xn ) = x1 for all (xn ) ∈ Y . Determine all the Hahn
Banach extensions of g to (l1 , k · k1 ).
