Understanding the Network. Transformers. ? Electrical transformers invented in 1880’s are stationary devices that transform electrical energy
in coherence to the mutual induction principle. The primary operation of the equipment is to transfer electricity across different circuits with
slight variation in the voltage/potential or the power frequency. These can be bifurcated primarily as power and distribution products with costs
ranging from a few thousands to over USD 4 Million depending on the rated capacity, voltage, current and application. ? The distribution
network takes the major share of the cake due to the high-demand of electricity at very last consumer end. Transformer Types. ? Power
Transformers Deployed in transmission networks at high voltages, It is one of those which is used in electrical substation to convert high
transmission line voltage (132KV,220KV,400KV,750KV etc.) to distribution line voltage. ? Distribution Transformers Deployed in distribution
networks at low voltages, it is the one to provide final voltage in electrical distribution system, stepping it down to the level used by the end
consumer. Industry Threats & Challenges. ? As promising as it seems, the industry (suppliers & customers) are still not able to utilize the full
potentiality of this network / market. Indian transformer industry has been facing the various challenges of availability of adequate quantity of
raw material, testing facilities and skilled manpower. Issues like high input cost due to exchange rate, crude price, and working capital
management for MSME sector to continue to be the hurdles in the sector. Listing the major stumbling blocks faced by the manufacturers in the
market. Industry Threats & Challenges (cont.) ? India’s transformer market is predominantly unorganised with many small participants catering
to the smaller distribution transformer market. This makes the market more competitive and price sensitive rather than quality. If an
organisation focuses on quality manufacturing of transformers, they can sustain the competition and have incremental growth as well. ? The
supply of CRGO is one of the major challenge in the industry as it needs to be imported and there is less supply. ? Certifications of each and
every product become an expensive process due to less number of testing facilities. Large power transformers are sometimes sent to
overseas facilities for testing it. ? BIS circulation has issued strict norms on transformer losses and it is expected in next 3 years time discoms
have to replace all existing transformers with “level 3 transformers (5-star rated). Also to supply these new transformers in millions to the
discoms in a maximum period of 3 years. Industry Threats & Challenges (cont.) ? Ambiguity around GST rates for capital goods products has
added further to the business slowdown. ? The cost of manufacturing of quality transformers as per Level 3 is quite high (IS 1180 transformer
almost costs double of IS 2026) so few competitors are finding nook and corners to sacrifice on materials to bag orders which ultimately does
not serve the basic purpose that is to reduce distribution losses by supply highly efficient transformer. ? Dual certification by the two
government authorities created hurdles in carrying out smooth business. The transformer manufacturing cycle was also ignored considering
ongoing orders under section ? Unfair competition, due to abnormally low pricing pattern of some manufacturers, who, in absence of proper
enforcement and monitoring mechanism, were able to supply the actual product deviating from specification. Others are left with either to
adopt unfair practice or with reduced margins or even loss of business. Industry Threats & Challenges (cont.) ? The misuse of warranty or
guarantee period insisted by DISCOMs or utilities in the tender hurts the interests of the transformer manufacturers. Due to long warranty or
guarantee period five years backed by bank guarantee, the cash flow or working capital limits of the manufacturers gets adversely affected,
and day to day business transaction suffer. ? DISCOMs do not adhere to proper maintenance schedule of the DT’s resulting in premature
failure of the transformer & manufacturer has to replace the transformer free of charge within the warranty said. ? If an organization focuses
on quality manufacturing or transformers, they cannot sustain the competition due to rock-bottom cutting rates quited by the small players ?
Delay in payments by utilities or DISCOMs has aggravated the problems of the transformer industry. ? The industry has to depend on imports
for its requirement. The cost of CRGO accounts for around 25 per cent of the total cost of the production of transformers. According to ITMA,
the global production of CRGO stands at 35lakh metric tons per year whereas India presently requires about four lakh metric tons. Industry
Threats & Challenges (cont.) ? The failure of distribution transformer is one of the major concerns for the transformer industry. The failure rate
is officially stands at 14 per cent. PAN India level stands at around 13 per cent, of which, around 80 per cent of the failed distribution
transformers are repaired and the remaining are replaced by a new distribution transformer uni, resulting into around 2,600 crore INR expense
every year. The causes of failure re multifarious like: ? Non-adherence to national standards and tweaking of standards at some level ?
Compromised procurement ? Improper manufacturing practices ? Inadequate Quality control (QC) supervision ? Non-availability of funds
