6.0 Calculation of cement, sand and coarse aggregates in kg/cum (Trial Mix-I)

(a) Selection of water cement ratio (W/C) :

As per table -5 of IS : 456-2000, maximum W/C = 0.40

For above concrete, adopt W/C = 0.40 (By trial mix)

(b) Selection of water content :

From table No. -2 of IS 10262-2009, max. water content for 20mm coarse aggregates = 186 Litre
(for slump range 25 - 50mm)
But, Selection of water content = 154.00 lit/cum (By trial mix)

As plasticizer ( concrete admixture ) Conplast SP-430 of Fosroc Chemicals 0.5 %

by weight of cement) is used.

(c ) Determination of cement content :

Cement requirement : 385.00 Kg/cum Say 385.00 Kg/cum

(d) Determination of volume of coarse aggregate & Fine aggregate per unit volume of total aggregate :

As per Table-3 of IS:10262-2009, volume of coarse aggregate per unit volume of total aggregate
= 0.62 (for sand zone –II, coarse aggregates 20mm & W/C is 0.5
But W/C = 0.40
So decreases in W/C = 0.10
For decrease in W/C, the increase of volume of coarse aggregate
= (0.10 x 0.01)/0.05 = 0.02
For W/C of 0.50, volume of coarse aggregate per unit vol.of total aggregate = 0.62
Therefore, increase vol. of coarse aggregates = 0.640
And volume of fine aggregate per unit vol. of total aggregate = 0.360

(e) Calculation of Mix per unit vol. of concrete :

i. Volume of concrete = 1 m3

ii. Volume of cement in m3 = ( ( 385.0/ 3.15) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.122

iii. Volume of water in m3 = ( (154.0/ 1.00) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.154

iv. Volume of admixture in m3 = ( (1.925/ 1.12) x 1.0 / 1000.0) = 0.0017
v. Volume of all in aggregate in m 3
= ( 1.0 - ( 0.122 +0.154+0.0017 ) ) = 0.722

vi. Mass of coarse aggregate in Kg/m = 3

( 0.722x0.640 x 2.74x1000.0 ) = 1266.10
Say = 1266.0
vi. Mass of fine aggregates in Kg/ m = 3
( 0.722x0.360 x 2.65 x 1000.0 ) = 688.79
Say = 689.0

(a) Selection of water cement ratio (W/C) :

As per table -5 of IS : 456-2000, maximum W/C = 0.45

For above concrete, adopt W/C = 0.39 (By trial mix)

(b) Selection of water content :

From table No. -2 of IS 10262-2009, max. water content for 20mm coarse aggregates = 186 Litre
(for slump range 25 - 50mm)
But, Selection of water content = 154.00 lit/cum (By trial mix)

As plasticizer ( concrete admixture ) Conplast SP-430 of Fosroc Chemicals 0.5 %

by weight of cement) is used.

(c ) Determination of cement content :

Cement requirement : 395.00 Kg/cum Say 395.00 Kg/cum

(d) Determination of volume of coarse aggregate & Fine aggregate per unit volume of total aggregate :

As per Table-3 of IS:10262-2009, volume of coarse aggregate per unit volume of total aggregate
= 0.62 (for sand zone –II, coarse aggregates 20mm & W/C is 0.5
But W/C = 0.39
So decreases in W/C = 0.11
For decrease in W/C, the increase of volume of coarse aggregate
= (0.11 x 0.01)/0.05 = 0.022
For W/C of 0.50, volume of coarse aggregate per unit vol.of total aggregate = 0.62
Therefore, increase vol. of coarse aggregates = 0.642
And volume of fine aggregate per unit vol. of total aggregate = 0.358

(e) Calculation of Mix per unit vol. of concrete :

i. Volume of concrete = 1 m3

ii. Volume of cement in m3 = ( ( 395.0/ 3.15) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.125

iii. Volume of water in m3 = ( (154.0/ 1.00) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.154

But, Selection of water content = 168.00 lit/cum (By trial mix)

As plasticizer ( concrete admixture ) Conplast SP-430 of Fosroc Chemicals 0.5 %

by weight of cement) is used.

(c ) Determination of cement content :

Cement requirement : 420.00 Kg/cum Say 420.00 Kg/cum

(e) Calculation of Mix per unit vol. of concrete :

i. Volume of concrete = 1 m3

ii. Volume of cement in m3 = ( ( 420.0/ 3.15) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.133

iii. Volume of water in m3 = ( (168.0/ 1.00) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.168

iv. Volume of admixture in m3 = ( (2.100/ 1.12) x 1.0 / 1000.0) = 0.0019
v. Volume of all in aggregate in m 3
= ( 1.0 - ( 0.133 +0.168+0.0019 ) ) = 0.697

vi. Mass of coarse aggregate in Kg/m = 3

( 0.697x0.640 x 2.79x1000.0 ) = 1244.56
Say = 1245.0
vi. Mass of fine aggregates in Kg/ m = 3
( 0.697x0.360 x 2.65 x 1000.0 ) = 664.94
Say = 665.0

But W/C = 0.39
So decreases in W/C = 0.11
For decrease in W/C, the increase of volume of coarse aggregate
= (0.11 x 0.01)/0.05 = 0.022
For W/C of 0.50, volume of coarse aggregate per unit vol.of total aggregate = 0.62
Therefore, increase vol. of coarse aggregates = 0.642
And volume of fine aggregate per unit vol. of total aggregate = 0.358

(e) Calculation of Mix per unit vol. of concrete :

i. Volume of concrete = 1 m3

ii. Volume of cement in m3 = ( ( 431.0/ 3.15) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.137

iii. Volume of water in m3 = ( (168.0/ 1.00) x 1.0 / 1000.0 ) = 0.168
