CADD Centre, in Association with Bentley Systems, Launches Training on STAAD.Pro V8i
CADD Centre, in association with Bentley Systems, conducted an
industry institution interaction program on “Structural Design &
Analysis” at Hotel Breeze, Chennai, on 19 March 2010.
The event marked the launch of training in STAAD.Pro V8i and
Microstation Powerdraft V8i, the latest version from Bentley
Systems. CADD Centre, in an effort to bridge the gap between the
industry and the institution, invited Head of Departments,
professors, and lecturers from engineering colleges to grace the
occasion. The event served as a platform to connect the teaching
fraternity with the industry to discuss about the latest
accomplishments in the structural engineering and construction
industry.
The program kicked off with a welcome note by Mr. Subramanian,
Country Head-Operations, CADD Centre. The program
commenced with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the guests.
Mr. Amit Saxena, Director-Sales, Bentley Systems, spoke about
worldwide structural design and Bentley Systems' role. This was
followed by a presentation on comprehensive software solutions
for sustaining infrastructure by Mr. N. Rajadurai, Director-
Technical, Bentley Systems. A software demo on STAAD.Pro V8i
and Microstation Powerdraft V8i was given by Mr. P. V. Mohan,
Technical-Consultant, Bentley Systems.
The keynote speaker, Mr. Rajaram, Ph.D., visiting professor, IITM,
NIT-Trichy, and Hindustan University, delivered a presentation on
“The Need for structural design software knowledge” which was
well received.
The event also witnessed the official launch of STAAD.Pro V8i by
Mr. S. Karaiadi Selvan, Director-Operations, CADD Centre
Training Division. This was followed by his presentation on CADD
Centre-Power of Size. The program ended with a vote of thanks.

Green Buildings – for a greener and eco-friendly world!
The buildings
in which we
live, work,
and play
protect us
from Nature's
extremes. Yet
they also
affect our
health and
environment in countless ways. The
design, construction, operation,
maintenance, and removal of buildings use
enormous amounts of energy, water, and
materials, and generate large quantities of
waste and air and water pollution.
As the environmental impact of buildings
becomes more apparent, a concept called
“Green Building” is gaining momentum.
Green or sustainable building is the
practice of creating healthier and more
resource-efficient models of construction,
renovation, operation, maintenance, and
demolition. Research and experience
increasingly demonstrate that when
buildings are designed and operated with
their life cycle impact in mind, they can
provide great environmental, economic,
and social benefits.
Green buildings are steadily increasing
their footprint in India. Today, a variety of
green building projects are coming up in
the country – residential complexes,
exhibition centers, hospitals, educational
institutions, laboratories, IT parks,
airports, government buildings, and
corporate offices.
Green Building Materials
The concept of sustainable building
incorporates and integrates a variety of
strategies during the design, construction,
and operation of building projects. The use
of green building materials and products
represents an important strategy in the
design of a building.
Green building materials offer specific
benefits to the building owner and building
occupants:

Reduced maintenance/replacement
costs over the life of the building.
v
Energy conservation.
v
Improved occupant health and
productivity.
v
Lower costs associated with changing
space configurations.
v
Greater design flexibility.
Building and construction activities
worldwide consume 3 billion tons of raw
materials each year or 40% of total global
use. Using green building materials and
products promotes conservation of
dwindling nonrenewable resources
internationally. In addition, integrating
green building materials into building
projects can help reduce the environmental
impact associated with the extraction,
transport, processing, fabrication,
installation, reuse, recycling, and disposal
of these building source materials.
Resource Efficiency
This can be accomplished by utilizing
materials that meet the following criteria:
Recycled
v Content: Products with
identifiable recycled content, including
postindustrial content with a preference
for postconsumer content.
Natural, plentiful, or renewable:
v expectancies.
Materials harvested from sustainably
managed sources and preferably having
an independent certification (e.g.,
certified wood) and certified by an
independent third party.
Resource-efficient manufacturing
v criteria:
