Lindsay Courser Dream Job Assignment 1/24/20

My dream job when I’m older is to be a head coach or general manager for a

professional basketball team. The best job description that I could find was for a coach of a

college team, but it would still apply no matter the level that I coach at. It states that the head

coach “is responsible for creating and maintaining a successful basketball program” (Panola

College, n.d.). A coach has a lot of responsibilities, including buying equipment, developing a

schedule, making travel arrangements, recruiting players, and much more. This would differ

from a professional team because the coach would focus more on player development and

training. For this job, the college is looking for someone with a master’s degree, but many

successful coaches only have their bachelor’s degree.

I do not think this level of education is required for most coaching jobs, and I believe

that I should be able to become a coach with a bachelor’s degree but having a master’s degree

can increase chances of getting a coaching job. This is especially true if I want to work at a

higher level, like professional sports. Master’s programs can be helpful because they branch out

to more topics like, “nutrition, sport psychology, and kinesiology.” (Psychology Degree Guide,

n.d.). My current and future classes will help me obtain the knowledge I need to do my dream

job because I am taking classes for sport management and learning more about how the sports

industry works. Even classes that are part of the business core will help me because they are

teaching me how a business should operate and the pieces that go into a successful business. I

think the class that will help me the most in the future is the coaching practicum because I will

get the chance to actually coach a team and gain real experience.

It is difficult to find a salary for my dream job because it would depend on what league I

work in and even what gender I coach. If I were to coach for a college, “the median salary for

coaches of a men’s team in 2010 was $329,300, nearly twice that of coaches for women’s

teams, who has a median of $171,600.” (Gentry & Alexander , 2012). It would also be very

difficult for me to work in men’s professional sports if I decided that is what I wanted because

as of 2015, “there [were] three female coaches in men’s professional sports,” (Carrasco, 2015).

I would manage this money by creating a plan for how much I need monthly for things such as

bills and groceries, and then put the rest in a bank account to save. This way I know I would

always have money in case of an emergency.
