Assignment 2
Submission to: Ms. Rumessa Naqvi
1)Think about the last three movies or television shows set in the
United States that you have watched. In what ways would these
entertainment products be helpful or unhelpful for people from
other countries trying to learn about the U.S. culture?
1. Love, Simon
This movie is based on a teenage boy who had difficulty opening
up to his family and friends about his sexual orientation. The
movie is an example of how majority of the people in the U.S do
not frown upon homosexuality. Whereas, in other culture, this is
still something which is not considered acceptable. Thus, it
indicates how the U.S culture is more tolerant of people’s sexual
preferences, but in other cultures, this is still considered a taboo.
2. Trust
The movie is a representation of how much trust parents in the U.S
have in their children and how much freedom they give to them.
However, in certain circumstances, this can lead to disastrous
consequences. Parents in other culture also trust their children a lot
but the extent of freedom that children here get is limited. Online
friendships and friendships with the opposite gender are not widely
acceptable in other cultures. Another thing to be noted is that rape
in other cultures is linked to a man’s honor and a lot of times,
women are killed to protect their honor. However, this is not the
case in the U.S. Though women who have been raped face many
difficulties in other cultures.
3. Crash
This film explores race relations and social tensions in Los
Angeles, California and gives a glimpse into many cultural aspects
of not only L.A., but the rest of the U.S. as well. The main issue
throughout the movie is racism and the perspectives on different
cultures. The movie is set in Los Angeles, a city with a cultural mix
of every nationality. Crash is full of ethnocentrism. As the movie
continues so the clash between different nationalities. A Persian
store owner were attempting to purchase a gun for safety. The
clerk, who is white made several racist comments towards them.
He called the family Arab and made several comments referring to
the twin towers and planes. This scene is depicting the type of
social conditions America has after 9/11. This movie continues to
show all different types of racism. In one scene, two black men
were walking down the street complaining of how everyone is so
racist. So, this movie is the best depiction of American society.
