Wheel head noises at ZF axles - series MT-L and MT-G 3000

On MT-L and MT-G3000 axles there are sporadic slight “clacking noises“ in the area of the wheel head.
Noises are mostly occurring during the following driving maneuvers in connection with solid road condition:
• Steering at standstill
• Load change (reversing)
The clacking noises are usually only noticeable outside of the vehicle. The reason for these noises are low
tolerances in the backlash of the gear splines between output shaft and planetary carrier. The noises are resulting
from micro motions occurring with alternating load directions between the contact faces of the components of
output shaft and bearing inner ring / planetary carrier. These micro motions have always existed on these axles.
These micro motions can generate a „Stick-Slip”-effect in case of an unfavorable tolerance position, which is
noticeable as clacking noise.

Note: The noise has no impact on the functionality or service life of the components. The noise has
no consequences on the further operation of the vehicle!
Repair claims of the customers must be rejected.

It is possible to document the noise by completing the “noise-check-data sheet” (page 2) and sending the data
sheet to the following ZF address for further analysis and evaluation:
Fax: +49 (0)851 494 7580 or E-Mail: warranty.zfp@zf.com

Assembly instructions:
If disassembly of the output shaft is necessary as part of further repair works, the noise can be reduced by using
the assembly agent „Weicon anti-seize“.
For this purpose apply assembly agent to the contact face of the output shaft/planetary carrier (design I) or
output shaft/bearing (design II), see arrow ! ZF order number „ Weicon Anti-Seize“ : 0671 196 001
