Problem 1 (From the textbook.)

For Exercises 15 – 46, assume that f is the function whose domain is the interval [1,5], whose
range is the interval [1,3], and whose graph is the figure below.

The graph of f
For each given function g:

(a) Find the domain of g.

(b) Find the range of g.
(c) Sketch the graph of g.

16. g(x) = f(x) + 3 30. g(x) = 2 – f(x)

Domain: [1,5] Range: [ 4,6] Domain: [1,5] Range: [ −1,1]

24. g(x) = f(x – 2) 34. g(x) = f(x + 2) + 1

Domain: [3, 7 ] Range: [1,3] Domain: [ −1,3] Range: [ 2, 4]

Problem 2 (From the textbook)

For Exercise 50, suppose f is a function whose domain is the interval [– 5,5] and that f(x) =
x
for every x in the interval [0,5].
x+3

50. Suppose f is an odd function. Evaluate f(–3).

3 1
Since f is odd, we have f ( −3) = − f ( 3) = − =−
3+3 2

56. Show that the sum of two even functions is an even function.

The solution was presented in class.

Problem 3 Symbolically determine whether each function is even, odd, or neither.

You must show your work, and be convincing.

• f ( x ) = x3 − x5
3 5
f ( − x ) = ( − x ) − ( − x ) = − x 3 − ( − x5 ) = − x3 + x 5 = − ( x 3 − x5 ) = − f ( x )
Since f ( − x ) = − f ( x ) , the function f is odd.

x3 + x5
• o( x ) =
x
− x3 − x5 − ( x + x ) x 3 + x5
3 5 3 5

o ( −x) =
(−x) + ( −x) = = = = o ( x)
−x −x −x x
Since o ( − x ) = o ( x ) , the functio o is even.

• g ( x) = x − 2
g ( − x ) = − x − 2 = − ( x + 2 ) = −1 x + 2 = x + 2 . Note that − g ( x ) = − x − 2 .
Since g ( − x ) ≠ g ( x ) and g ( − x ) ≠ − g ( x ) , g is neither even nor odd.

3
• h ( x) = x + x +1
3 3
h (−x) = 3
− x + ( − x ) + 1 = − x − x + 1. Note that − h ( x ) = − x − x − 1.
Since h ( − x ) ≠ h ( x ) and h ( − x ) ≠ − h ( x ) , h is neither even nor odd.

Problem 4 Graph each function. Describe in one sentence how you are able to graph it as a
translation, or reflection, or both from the function f ( x ) = x 2 .

• r(x) = (x + 1)2 – 1

We may obtain the graph of r by translating

the graph of f to the left by 1 unit and then
down by one unit.

• t(x) = – (x – 1)2

We may obtain the graph of t by translating

the graph of f to the right by one unit and
then reflect with respect to the horizontal
axis.

• s(x) = x2 – 4x + 4

2
Note that s ( x ) = ( x − 2 ) . We may obtain the
graph of s by translating the graph of f to
the right by two units.

Problem 5

(a) Symbolically prove that f ( x ) = x 2 − 5 is an even function.

2
f ( − x ) = ( − x ) − 5 = x2 − 5 = f ( x ).
Since f ( − x ) = f ( x ) , f is an even function.

(b) Graph the function and explain how the graph shows that the function is an even
function.

Since the graph of f is symmetric with

respect to the vertical axis, f is an even
funtion.
