Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

ReadThinkWrite is a great website that allows teachers to engage students in the lesson being learned in a
fun way. This website gives teachers to an array of resources that support student learning. The timeline
feature of this website allows teachers to create a timeline to present to students and enhance their learning.
Students can also utilize this tool to create their own working, giving students voice and choice on material.
This website is easily accessible since it can be accessed via online. Overall, this tool is a new and exciting way
to get students involved in the learning material.

Lesson idea implementation:

In the beginning of this lesson I will introduce the standard and the I can statement to the students. This will
allow the students to have an understanding of what is to be accomplished during this lesson. Then I will
cover the topic being learned through allowing the students to watch a video of Martin Luther King, Jr. on
BrainPOP and write down 3 facts from the video. After the video, I will go on to cover additional important
information that occurred in MLK’s life. Once I finish explaining the important details to MLK’s life, then as a
class we will create a timeline of his life and these events to organize our thinking. Using the tool
ReadWriteThink, as a class we can organize our findings. Once we have organized our findings as a class the
students will have a visual representation of what we have just learned. I will then discuss with the students
that they will be creating their own timelines, using ReadWriteThink, that contain 8 facts and presenting it to
the class today.

The students will have to choose another historical figure from Georgia history to cover their timeline over.
After choosing their person, students will be put into groups of the same choice. Students will then do their
own research using BrainPOP and other resources to find additional information on their selected historical
figure. Once each group has gathered 8 facts on their historical figure, they will create their timeline through
the ReadWriteThink website. The students will be allotted time to create their timeline and as a group will
present their timeline at the end of class. Each member of the group much speak, and each timeline must

contain 8 facts during the presentation. The teacher will use an appropriate grade rubric to grade each
presentation and provide feedback.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson is a great lesson that engages students in learning new content. This lesson is an introduction to
the unit that will be covered in class. In the main lesson I will elaborate on each historical figure and go into
details about their lives. I can further extend this lesson through requesting that the students go on a field trip
to a museum that contains all the historical figures of Georgia. The students will be able to gather additional
information on each figure in a fun way. Additionally, the students can utilize BrainPOP even further through
playing the interactive games that BrainPOP provides.
