Amazing Words
Objectives:
 Students will be able to use background knowledge and pictures to brainstorm definitions
of words
1. Review yesterday’s amazing words
o Tempted
o Amount
o Resist
2. Introduce the new amazing word with turn and talk for each word
3. Have students share their definitions
4. Cover actual definition with examples and put into context

Vowel Diphthongs

Objectives:
 Students will be able to categorize words based on their vowel diphthong
 Students will be able to identify words with the vowel diphthong ou, ow, oi, or oy
1. Introduce diphthongs of ow, ou, oi, and oy that are written on board
2. Have students hold up a finger, 1-4, showing which category each word falls under
a. 1-ow
b. 2-ou
c. 3-oi
d. 4-oy
3. Complete vowel diphthong (pg. 84) worksheet altogether
Literary Terms

Objectives:
 Students will be able to come up with definitions of similes using the words like or as
1. Read definition of simile and give examples
2. Ask students to give examples of similes
Vocabulary

Objectives:
 Students will be able to read and define words
 Students will be able to identify prefixes and suffixes
 Students will be able to identify vocabulary words while listening to a story
 Students will be fill in sentences with the correct vocabulary words

1. Ask students what they think each word means


2. Read actual definition of the vocabulary word and give examples

3. Have students rip out page 87 and complete vocabulary worksheet on their own
4. Discuss prefixes and suffixes and how they can change a word or help us figure out the

5. Do vocabulary read and have students raise hands when they hear their vocabulary words

Writing Conventions
Objectives:
 Students will be able to identify a simple sentence
 Students will be able to identify a compound sentence
 Students will be able to use the correct connecting word to complete a compound
sentence

1. Explain compound sentences and simple sentences


2. Practice as a whole group identifying simple sentences and compound sentences
3. Practice as a whole group making compound sentences while students write them on their
desks with expo marker
