● Motivating Introduction
○ I will introduce the lesson by placing word cards that identify nouns on my clothing and
on other objects around the room.
○ Ask: Boys and girls look around the classroom and tell me if you notice anything
different?
○ What do you see?
○ What part of speech do you think the words in the cards represent?
The words on the cards are nouns.
○ How can we classify or categorize these words?
○ Can you think of any other places where you see nouns being used? (HOTS)
Objective and Importance
○ Today we are going to be learning about nouns. We will discuss what a noun is and
identify examples of nouns. We will also be classifying nouns based on three categories
(person, place, or thing).
● Content of Lesson
○ Use the “What is a noun?” flipchart to introduce the lesson by defining what a noun is
and classifying examples of nouns by type (person, place, and thing).
a. Explain the difference between common and proper nouns.
b. Explain that common nouns are not capitalized. Common nouns do not name a
specific person, place, or thing. Proper nouns are capitalized and name a specific
person, place, or thing.
○ Model and explain Rally Robin
○ Rally Robin:
1. Divide students up into 3 teams to identify the three types of nouns.
Round 1:
Row 1: Can you identify a person?
Row 2: Can you identify a place?
Row 3: Can you identify a thing?
2. Within each row the students are seated in pairs so each student already has a partner.
3. Students will take turns responding orally to the questions.
○ Can you create a sentence using one of the common nouns from our list? (HOTS)
● Closure and Review:
○ Boys and girls, can you tell me what we did today? (HOTS)
○ Can you tell me something you learned today? (HOTS)
● Activity:
Day 1: Students will write 4 sentences using at least 1 noun in each sentence.
Day 2: As a class, we will go to the computer lab and the students will create a picture using
Paint & Create (h ttp://abcya.com/abcya_paint.htm) to correspond with one of the five
sentences.
○ I will save the students’ projects to create “Noun” PowerPoint presentation.
