Welcome to People, Places, and Things Listening.
This three-level series of listening textbooks is for students of English as a second or foreign language.
lt is ideal to use alongsi de People, Places, and Things Reading. Each unit in the Listening series is
thematically linked to the corresponding unit in the Reading series-so that the Listening series may
be used on its own or as part of an integrated skills program.
PREPARE TO LISTEN
This section introduces the topic of the audio track. Students are asked to look at the photograph
and then discuss two questions with a partner. The questions are intended to stimulate interest and
activate prior knowledge of the chapter topic.
WORD FOCUS 1
This matching activity introduces students to new or unfamiliar words they will hear in the audio
track. Students match the ten words with simple definitions. These vocabulary terms will be reviewed
in the Vocabulary Review at the end of the unit.
MAKE A PREDICTION
This activity encourages students to make a prediction regarding the content of the audio track they
are about to hear. They are then directed to listen and check their answer to the prediction question.
AUDIO TRACK
The eight units each contain four audio tracks related to a common theme: the first audio track
is about a person, the second is about a place, the third is about a th ing, and the fourth-in the
review chapter-can be about a person, place, or thing. Each audio track recycles new words from
earlier chapters so that students gradually build on and consolidate their vocabulary. The language
is carefully graded so that students gain confidence in their listening comprehension abilities. Each
of the audio tracks in Level 1 is approximately 1.5-2.5 minutes long. Each audio track uses native
English speakers.
WORD FOCUS 2
This activity introduces students to four additional vocabulary words from the audio track. Students
listen to the audio track again and write each word next to its definition. This activity is meant to
help students determine the meanings of words from context. These vocabulary terms will also be
reviewed in the Vocabulary Review at the end of the unit.
iv TO THE TEACHER
VOCABULARY REVIEW
This section reviews the 42 vocabulary words presented in the unit. lt includes a wide variety of
activities, such as Words in Context (filling in the blanks) and Wrong Word (finding the word that
doesn't fit the group). Other activities include Word Families, Synonyms or Antonyms?, True or False?,
and three types of puzzles: Crossword, Word Search, and Mystery Phrase. The aim is to help students
begin to use the new words as part of their active vocabulary.
WRAP IT UP
This section begins with a doze passage related to the unit topic. This features a short passage in
a recognizable genre-e-mail, letter, advertisement, etc. The passage requires that students fill in
the blanks using 6-8 vocabulary words from the unit. Next, students have another Prepare to Listen
activity to stimulate interest in the next audio track. After listening to the audio track, students answer
Check Your Comprehension questions. The section ends with another What About You? activity.

VOCABULARY SELF-QUIZ
This is a unit-by-unit word list that lists the vocabulary words for each chapter. There is a space
next to each word where students can write a translation or other notes. Students can then test
themselves on the word's meaning. The aim is to help students study the vocabulary outside class.
VOCABULARY INDEX
This is an index of the vocabu lary words that appear in Level 1. Each word is followed by a reference
to the page on wh ich it is introduced, and also to the page on which it is reviewed.
