Wadi a1 Asla Petrological Analyses

BY

Mohammed Al-Saigh and Adil Matari

Sample number: st.2n
Location: lat. 21'35' 25.1" long. 39'19' 04.2"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: quartz diorite.
Texture: subhedral granular texture.
Mineral composition: the rock consists mainly of plagioclase and pyroxene along with k-
feldspar and quartz. Plagioclase is of andesine composition. It is subhedral and it appears
clouded due to sericite alteration. It also contains inclusions of pyroxene. Pyroxene - both
clino- and ortho-pyroxene- is found in mineral aggregates and included in feldspars. K-
feldspar crystals are anhedral. It is affected by sericite alteration and it includes inclusions of
pyroxene. Quartz crystals are subhedral to anhedral. It is abundant (about 20%). In some
places it is found in the interstitial spaces between the feldspar.
Alteration: the rock is affected by chlorite- sericite alteration. The chlorite is found in the
interstitial spaces between the minerals. Sericite is attacking the feldspar crystals. The
alteration is moderate, except for one portion ofthe section where it is high.

Sample number: st.8n

Location: lat. 39'19' 10.0" long. 2T35' 21.1"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: quartzo-feldspathic mylonite.
Texture: granoblastic texture with phenocrysts of feldspar, biotite and quartz. The minerals
show orientation.
Mineral composition: the rock consists mainly of quartz, feldspar and biotite. Quartz crystals
are fine, it is the main constituent of the groundmass. In some portions of the section the
quartz crystals are coarser, forming mineral aggregates with the feldspar. Feldspar crystals are
coarse, anhedral and appear in different portions of the section forming mineral aggregates. It
was affected by sericite alteration. The plagioclase crystals are subhedral and vary in size
from coarse to fine. It is found in the groundmass. It is affected by sericite alteration. Biotite
appears in prismatic form showing orientation.
Opaque: A small percentage ofthe rock consists of opaque minerals.
Alteration: the rock is slightly affected by alteration. The products of alteration are epidot,
chlorite, sericite and calcite.

Sample number: st.4n

Location: lat. 39O19' 07.1" long. 21'35' 21.9"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: epidotized intermediate rock.
Texture: granular texture.
Mineral composition: the rock consists of plagioclase, hornblende, pyroxene and minor
quartz. The rock is affected by epidotization, only a remnant of the original mineral
composition is present. The plagioclase, of andesitic composition, shows subhedral form.
Hornblende - green verity- appears in tabular form. Pyroxene is both clino- and ortho-
pyroxene. The epidot is attacking all the previous minerals. Quartz constitutes about 10
percent ofthe rock. It is anhedral and medium in size.
Sample number: st.3n
Location: lat. 39'19' 05.3" long. 21-35' 23.4"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: intermediate rock.
Texture: microgranular texture.
Mineral composition: the rock consists of plagioclase, pyroxene and hornblende along with
and abundant amount of quartz. Plagioclase - of andesitic composition - is fine in size and
appears in subhedral to anhedral form. The pyroxene is of both clino- and ortho-pyroxene. It
appears in an irregular form. Hornblende is green in color and show weak pleochroism. It
appears in tabular form and also in an irregular form. Quartz is found in the interstitial spaces
between minerals. A few phenocrysts of k-feldspar are present. A small percentage ofthe
rock consists of opaque minerals. It is disseminated in the rock.
Remarks: there is one micro-vein filled with very fine material. It is cut by a set of micro-
fractures. These micro-fractures are filled with quartz and calcite. It forms a network.

Sample number: st.6al

Location: lat. 39"19' 12" long. 2 f 3 5 ' 15.1"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: granodiorite.
Texture: subhedral granulartexture. In some portions of the rock the quartz crystals show
wnsertal texture.
Mineral composition: the rock consists mainly of plagioclase and hornblende along with k-
feldspar and quartz. Sphene is found as an accessory mineral. Plagioclase is of andesitic
composition. It is subhedral to anhedral and coarse in size. The crystals are moderately to
highly affected by sericite alteration. The hornblende - green verity - shows pleochroism. It
appears in irregular form. K-feldspar crystals are medium in size and they are anhedral and
are affected by sericite alteration. Quartz crystals are medium to fine in size. It forms mineral
aggregates. It is abundant. A small percentage of the rock consists of opaque minerals.

Sample number: st.7atl

Location: lat. 39'19' 10.3"long. 2 f 35' 15.4"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: granodiorite.
Similar to sample st.6al. Except for the presence of biotite which appears in mineral
aggregates. There is also epidot. The percentage of quartz is smaller than in the previous
sample.

Sample number: st.7at2

Location: lat. 3919' 10.3" long. 21-35' 15.4"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: basalt.
Texture: intergranular texture.
Mineral composition: the rock consists of plagioclase (labradorite), augite and opaque
minerals. Plagioclase crystals are prismatic and medium in size. Augite appears in an irregular
form. It forms subophitic texture with the plagioclase. Opaque minerals are disseminated in
the rock showing subhedral form. It is found in the interstitial spaces.
Alteration: the rock is moderately altered. The alteration products are sericite, chlorite and
calcite.

Sample number: s r . o u ~
Location: lat. 39'19' 12" long. 21'35' 15.1"
Sample type: rock sample.
Rock name: mylonite.
Texture: granoblastic texture, With phenocrysts of feldspar. The minerals show orientation.
Mineral composition: the rock consists of feldspar, quartz and biotite. Plagioclase and k-
feldspar are found in the groundmass and as phenocrysts also. Quartz is the main constituent
of the groundmass. Biotite crystals are prismatic and show orientation.
Opaque: a small percentage of the rock consists of opaque minerals. It is disseminated in the
rock.
Alteration: the rock is slightly altered. The alteration products are epidot, sericite and
chlorite.
