Product Name Beware
Sour Patch Kids
Target Audience
No one likes a good piece of candy like a kid does. And so, that is who I will be target-
ing this product to. My range of age will be from young kids to teenagers. I hope to design
a package that has a variety of bright colors that will attract the eyes of those who are too
short to grab the package, and a design that will make older kids reach up and grab it off
the shelf.
History
According to the makers of Sour Patch Kids, this simple candy began in an even more
simple world. They were called Mars Men and would sell for only one cent. This title was
popular because of the continuous sightings of UFOs. And so, the little candies were formed
as aliens invading from Mars.
The new taste of sour coating on soft candy was brought forth in the 1970s and this
candy was the first to be tried using it. If facts are right, Frank Galatolie came up with the
idea of introducing sour products into candy making. In 1985, the new candy was introduced
as Sour Patch Kids. As of 2002, Sour Patch Kids has had new flavors, a new look, and new
packaging. (Found at www.sourpatchkids.com)
Ideas
My idea is to form a Halloween package. Everyone loves a good holiday theme,
and candy seems the perfect choice to do a Halloween theme on. The bright colors I will try
to keep so that the attention of young kids will easily be drawn to the product. And yet, I
hope to change the colors a bit so that there is an even more attraction to the package. The
font I will most likely keep big and bubbly, but perhaps add some touches here and there. I
want to make an enhancement of the sour part of the candies, but also encourage them to
know that there is some relief with the sweetness of it as well. However, I hope to add some
modern techniques and design in order to make it appear more desirable and worth one’s
money. I have the idea of making black box, because that is not a common color for candy
packaging. I’m hoping this uniqueness will draw more attention, and the fact that it will be
Halloween packaging gives it a good reason to be black.

Logo Redesign
This logo should be close to the center of the box with
a little more emphasis on the left side. This will bring in
enough focus but leave enough room for the rest of the
details such as dressed up sour patch kids, halloween deco-
rations, and more.

Grocery Store Ad
This cardboard ad would be placed in stores during the Hal-
loween season. Filled with boxes of Sour Patch kids, this
product would be easy for younger kids to see, and the per-
fect attraction for teenagers to easily reach in the box. With
the bright and fun images at a low level where kids can see
it, this advertising would target the right audience.
