DEFINITION OF TERMS

For clarity in understanding this research, the following terms were operationally

defined:

Computer Aided Instruction. The use of computer as a medium of instruction, it

gives the learner an opportunity to explore featured programs and educational software

provided by the computer with the guidance of the teacher.

Digital Divide. The inequality in a society with regards to access and use of

Information and Communication Technology.

Educational Technology. The study and practice in education that aims in

improving technology literacy and enabling learners to learn in a more informative way

through the use of appropriate technology tools inside the classroom such as electronic

whiteboards, projectors, desktops and laptops for videoconferencing.

Information and Communication Technology. The access and utilization of

information through communication technology such as the internet, cellphones and other

mediums of communication.

Internet. A system of interconnected networks linked through a wireless optical

networking technologies. It carries a vast of information, resources and services that can

be accessed by users through search engines.

Internet Access. The capability of an individual to access the internet and utilize

search engines like Google or Yahoo using devices such as computers, cellphones and

tablets.

Internet Accessibility. The access of internet regardless of its place and time of

use.

Internet Integration. Integrating lessons gathered from the internet in instruction

and also the direct use of internet if available inside the classroom.

Inquiry Based Learning. The strategy in teaching where students are given

questions or topics to search in the web.

Media. The communication channel used to provide news, facts or entertainment.

It includes physical and online mediums of communication such as the internet, television

and newspaper.

Media Uses and Gratifications. An approach which seeks to undertand why

people use media such as televisions, radio, computer and internet to fulfill needs and

goals.

Millennial Learners. Learners who are born in the 21st century, also known as the

2000s. The current learners of today is assumed to acquire and perform proficiency on

technology tools and devices.

Multimedia Learning. The use of devices such as laptops, projectors or LCD

screen televisions to provide visual and sound to learners.

Language Vocabulary Learning. The use of internet to search for definitions,

synonyms, antonyms, grammars and language translations to improve vocabulary.

Scholastic Performance. Refers to the school’s academic achievement in a

school year through computed mean percentage scores of each grade.

Setting. The condition of the environment in which the study is conducted. It

includes the status of internet connection as well as the accessibility of internet to

teachers.

Technology. The use of scientific knowledge in utilizing equipments for practical

purposes or application.

Technology Literacy. Refers to the ability of the users to use technological tools

with ease and proficiency.

Vis- à – Vis. Latin way of French where it means to come in contact face to face.

In English it is used as a preposition which means “in relation to”. In this study the term is

used to compare the use of internet access in relation to the academic performance of

the school.
